I'm starting to zero in on what I want done on my Ruger Flattop 45 Colt, stainless, 4 5/8". It's going to Bowen for the work, and I'm thinking about having him apply his "light weight" style scalloping on the receiver.
Anyone have pics of a revolver so modified? Opinions on how it would look on a Flattop? How does it affect opening the reloading gate? Thanks in advance.

Sorry, cannot help with a pick on a flat-top, but here is my little 45 ACP/LC on a new Vaquero. I really like the scalloping a lot on every gun I have seen--including a few regular blackhawk framed big-bore conversions.

My 500L Nimrod came with scallops.

While I'll accept the fact that the scallops do reduce weight, for me I see them as more of a style exercise. Personal preference is the driver. For me I'd never turn down a deal on a custom with scallops but don't know that I'd ever pay someone to do it.

I like it on a custom. However, on the Ruger it is more cosmetic than anything, as Bowen can not scallop the frame rails due to serial number placement. This depends on the individual smith's FFL license. If licensed as a "manufacturer" the may remove and replace the serial number. If not a manufacturer, they can not.

Like a banded barrel, I think they both look great and identify the piece as a true custom gun. I hoped the scalloping would possibly function as a rest for the offside thumb??

Does look like a some sort of rest for a thumb doesn't it! Stick your thumb up there and hold that beast down! FWIW I'm not sticking my thumb up there on my 500L.

I think the scalloped frame and banded barrel are not only sexy--but most importantly, they add "BALANCE" to the gun. And we all know balance is the absolute paramount consideration for any custom.
