This is my first Uberti and open top Pat. July 25, 1871 July 2, 1872, 38 Spec/5 1/2 barrel with engraving on the cyl. The gun was imported by Cimarron and has a three digit serial number, I assume it is an early import, I don't know to much about Uberti so I'm guessing. If it has been shot it is very little, the bluing is perfect case harding and brass backstrap are perfect, I have the box and paperwork too. I traded into this gun today, I just liked it. So if any of you all can help with some information on this one I'll be grateful.

I had one of these (different caliber) for a while. Most are nice revolvers. Some of the Uberti's from years past were accused of having soft internals: hand, pawl, etc. So, you may want to keep an eye on the timing. Mine was fine and shot straight.
I think Mike Cumpston has a few good articles on these.
Personally, I think these are a really fun handgun.

The "Open Top" model was Colt's first dedicated big bore cartridge sixgun. It was not a conversion at all but built for cartridges from the start. It resembles the 1860 upon which it is based. They were originally .44 rimfire only. Colt offered them to the Army, who returned and said they wanted a .45cal cartridge and a topstrap, among other things. Thus the Open Top was short-lived as the Single Action Army debuted only months later. Yours has the shorter Navy grip frame. These are good guns and I find them to be more usable than the 1860 conversions. Mine is a 7½" .44Colt with the Army grip frame and one-piece TruIvory.

Yer killin me CraigC !! After you posted that a few months back, I made an effort to get a couple of these for Cowboy action shooting. The ones I've handled at CAS matches are slick 'n smooth as butter. Only way to get these open tops are to order 'em. Only used ones I've seen are battered and beat up....plus price was what I can get new ones for.
