For a good while, I have been hearing really good things about HS-6 powder. For the fact that I have so many other powders that give me such good service on hand in quantity I hadnt ever gotten around to trying HS-6. Still, the other day I decided to go get me some. I just happend to be doing some research on it and discovered HS-6 is nothing more than the older Winchester 540. I had several lbs of it on my shelf. Turns out I been shooting it for some 30 years!

Yep. Does the 540 work well for you? I have some HS-6, just haven't burnt much of it. Since I bought it, I've been mostly working with H110 instead for hunting.
Most (all?) of the Winchester powders have or had a duplicate in Hodgdon's line.

I like HS6 in 45s and the big linebaughs myself. Makes for a nice easy shooting load.

HS6 is my go to powder in .475 for deer hunting. An LBT 400 gr. WFN over 15 gr. clocks at just over 1100 fps out of the BFR. More than enough for a whitetail without being too much for me.

I'll be damned! I've been wanting to try some HS6 and always heard about how good 540 was. Had no idea they were the same.

Yep. It's easier for me to find HP38 in 8 lb jugs here so that's what I have between that and 231

I just ran HS-6 in one of my 44 Specials a week or so ago and it performed very well with the 250 gr 429421 Keith. Only if I could have been a bit steadier... Also use it in the 475's and 500. I bought 8#er's of it and 4427 last year from Powder Valley.

According to Hodgdon's: HP38=WW231 HS6= WW540 H110=WW296 H414=WW760
I have used HP38 & WW231 in the same loads with the same results as well as HS6 & WW540. I called Hodgdon's a year or so ago to verify & the ballistition told me "yup, same stuff, comes out of the same spout!" Frank
