Was just wondering, what gun without any alterations and currently manufactured, would be the closest to Elmer's #5? No customs allowed.
My guess is the FA model 97, but wonder what other opinions are out there.
Just something I am sitting here and thinking about.....

Colt New Frontier, which is the model Elmer gift wrapped for them, and they declined for twenty five years.

Ruger Flattop Bisley Blackhawk, 44spl. Nearly a dead-ringer for the #5.

Ruger Flattop Bisley Blackhawk, 44spl. Nearly a dead-ringer for the #5. I own one because it's the closest thing I'll ever own to the No. 5.

I would agree on the new flat-top Bisley .44Spl's.

The Ruger .44 Special flattop, as others have said, but it's still a long ways from the original Number 5 in action, sights, gripframe, and base pin locking mechanism. On the other hand, it will cost you about $100,000 less than buying the original ;D

Having held a TLA #5 in my hand (hoping I wouldn't drop it) I can say its the closest to Elmers that is possible. I have FA's and Bisleys, close but no cigar. However, the Flat top Bisley available right now are as classy a SA that I've ever owned from Ruger. They are in 44spl, polish is out of this world and deminisons are deadnuts for groove and cylinder throats. Getcha one or two....most everyone I know did so.

No it aint a real #5 but the Bisley FT in the .44Special and .45Colt chambering do make for a modern economical solution to what EK 's train of thought was in the design of the original. That being a strong reliable sixgun chambered for a great cartridge, good adjustable target sights and a barrel short enough for belt carry but long enough to allow for good velocity and sight radius. That said the Ruger Bisley fits MY HAND better than the #5, Colt SAA and Bisley or the XR3, XR3RED, Dragoons etc. Have my .44FT Bisley, a FT s-s Acp/Colt that will become a bisley and a flatTOP .44 that am reworking to resemble the FA grip

I agree with this also. I love mine. CLOSEST to the No. 5 among current production sixguns? I agree with that, and I love mine as well. CLOSE to the No. 5? Not really. Grip frame, sights, action, and base pin locking mechanism are all far different. Still, the Ruger is a fine product - not on a par with Freedom Arms, but at a fraction of the cost. The only non-custom that was CLOSE was the Texas Longhorn Arms "Grover's Improved No. 5" - it's out of production, and the ones that can be found cannot be found on the cheap. www.tlabook.com/revolvers.htm

It's not current production, but maybe the Colt Flat Top Bisley?
Next might be the Ruger Flat Top Bisley? Frank
