tjcmo: Me too, I had a .500 S&W BFR and quickly sold it, as the recoil was ridiculous. I much prefer my S&W .500, alot less felt recoil!!

Good choice on the UltraDot; they are solid, can take a beating and are pretty affordable.

I have the 45-70 in a 10" It shoots and feels great. (i replaced the stock grips with hogues [superblackhawk #84000] monogrip - not quite a perfect fit but it sure fits my hand well - i will whittle on it to see if i can make it fit better) I did some load measurements using both 300gr. and 350gr. hornadies with a chronometer using both SR4759 and IMR 4198 powders. Will post the numbers if you want.... Have a picture of the BFR next to my other 2 wheelguns: Odd how a BFR can make a K/L frame seem positively dainty. ;D

I wonder how the recoil of the 500 Smith BFR compares to a 500 JRH BFR? The JRH has to be much lighter.

I wonder how the recoil of the 500 Smith BFR compares to a 500 JRH BFR? The JRH has to be much lighter. For me at least, my model 83 in 500JRH (fairly close weight wise to a small BFR) has a faster/sharper recoil, where as the 500SW BFR has a longer shove with more torque, ether can be pushed to be unpleasant. Loaded with 1680 the 500SW is a fun heavy push, use top end loads of H110 and it becomes nasty in a hurry, a real doctor Jekyll and Mr.hide !

Both of my BFR 45-70's have 28 lb. Wolff Ruger springs in them. I was experiencing light primer strikes and these springs solved the problem.

I couldn't even finish out the cylinder. That is the only gun that has hurt me like that (aside from some that cut me with sharp edges on frames/trigger guards). Maybe the finger grooves and palm swells change the way it recoils, more straight back into the hand or something. Whatever it was, I didn't like it.
