Local shop has a BFR in 45-70; looks interesting, and I've got 1500 Oregon Trail 405gr lead bullets left over from my last 45-70 project, along with about 10lbs of Trail Boss powder. ;D
Anybody have a BFR in 45-70? If so, how do you like it and what kind of loads are you running? I'm not interested in red-lining the cartridge; if I get the BFR, it'll be to shoot light and mid-range loads. I really prefer the Bisley grip for any kind of real recoil.

My .458 bore BFR turned out to be a 450M. There was a plan to have a 45-70 cylinder made but it hasn't happened. 450M brass and dies on hand make the need for a 45-70 cylinder moot.. Don't remember what I loaded for it but do remember that the wooden Hogue grips that came on it were not good for me. It now wears the original rubbers..

Yes, I have one, and I just loaded up some trail boss (13 grains) with 405 grain slugs. Estimated velocity is 1,000fps. Recoil is not bad, especially not compared to the .500 S&W BFR I had!! GO DUCKS!! #3 in BCS rankings!

Mine wears the 7.5 " tube. I have been shoting 38 gr. of IMR 4198 in the Hornady brass, which is a tad shorter than standard with good results. That is with Hornady 350 gr Flat Points.

Loved mine. With hot loads, I would rather shoot it than my guide gun. 425's and 525's were fun. The BFR's are very accurate. I've got a 500JRH now.

I've shot these fairly extensively and I have found that not only are they very accurate, even loaded hot they don't beat you up. Great guns, just a bit unweildy.

Thanks guys, I can get this BFR fairly inexpensively if I trade a few things in; that, and the big pile of 45-70 components I've got in the garage, make it an attractive way to get some big-bore experience before I take the plunge on a custom Bisley in .475 or .500 Linebaugh. I was surprised by how well the gun balanced when I handled it in the store, not unlike a Ruger .357 Maximum.

If I trade in a little used rifle I'd be into the BFR for about $300 cash.

I have 2 45-70 BFRs - 10" and 7.5". I normally shoot 300gr Oregon Trail over 24-25gr A2400. And I can shoot it all day long. I've also shot the same powder load with 405gr. Both are very accurate, low recoil due to the gun weight, no leading, and lots of fun. Be prepared for some strange looks and questions at the range though.

Yup, the 45-70 BFR is one sweet SAA With trapdoor level reloads 405gr she is a big old pussy cat! However, load up some modern 350gr loads and you better be on your game. Get it, you won't be sorry

If I trade in a little used rifle I'd be into the BFR for about $300 cash. That sounds fair, unless of course you're trading in a model 70 Winchester! If memory serves, I paid $625 for my 45-70 BFR on the used market, gun was 99.5% condition tho. I think you'll enjoy that BFR!

Go ahead and get it, but it's certainly not much of a "carry" gun, unless you put a sling on it :-)

truly enjoy my 10.5incher. Wears the wood hogue monogrip that i removed finger grooves and drastically reshaped. Feed it any old nominal 400grain cast and charge with 28grains of Accurate 5744 which duplicates the orignal 405g with 70g of black

GO DUCKS!! #3 in BCS rankings! I had a 500 S&W BFR too. That was the nastiest recoiling gun I ever owned. Sold it a couple years ago and my wrist thanked me.
