I seem to remember reading a spattering here and there about smiths that do their own work and some who have a team. Of the well known gunsmiths like Linebaughs, Bowen, Clements, Gallagher, Harton, Huntington, Reeder, etc. Which ones actually put the gun together themselves? Or do most have a helper or team that does certain things. I read an article recently that referred to several men who worked for a smith that each specialized in certain areas.
If you have a custom gun built by Mr. Gunsmith. Is it REALLY built by Mr. Gunsmith himself or a couple guys who work with/for him?

I know that Reeder and Bowen have teams of gunsmiths. I know that Reeder only does the bluing, polishing and engraving on his shop's guns. Not sure what exactly Bowen handles personally in his shop.
I also know that Stroh and Clements are one man shops. Pretty sure the Linebaughs, Gallagher, Harton and Huntington are too. Most of them are. Although some do farm out stuff like bluing and virtually all farm out their plating and case color work.

It all depends on the 'smith and sometimes even the timing of current events. Most of the guys like Andy Horvath, Alan Harton, John Gallagher, Jim Stroh, Dustin Linebaugh and Ben Forkin work solo if I recall our conversations correctly. I recently talked to Hamilton Bowen and due to one of his people taking a teaching position, he was doing much more of the hands on stuff once again. Others like Mr. Reeder and I believe Jack Huntington have others in their shops that do various tasks.

I believe John L. has had people helping him, in various capacities, from time to time, since shortly after he started in the business.

Supply and demand... if an artist is able to pass along his wisdom and knowledge we all benefit, in lower prices and shorter lead-times... Reeder has a team, and what a team it is. Allan Harton is a solo shop, I know because I've seen it first hand, you get the best, and wait half a lifetime to get it. I think it's all about passing on what they know... I feel bad for the greats who don't have anyone to pass the torch to... Dustin Linebaugh and Case Reeder are the next gen, the guys my kids will buy from!

When Bowen called me to say my nimrod was finished I asked him this question. He said generally each of them worked on each gun. He said he liked to do hand filing and finishing and let some of the other guys do milling. He said each of them had things they liked doing. He said he let others do most of the shooting anymore especially bigger stuff.
