I was wanting to get another FA model 97 and was wondering if the 44 special would be just as good or better because you would not have to worry about the cyclinder being to short? Would a deer or black bear know any difference? I have never owned a 44 special and alway kinda thought what the 44 could do, the 45 could do better. I know the 45 will work on deer and bears. Any advice would be appreciated.

44 or 41 would be my preference in a Model 97.
I can run 250 Keiths at 1200 fps in my mid frame 44 Special Blackhawks, which is plenty for most of what you'd need to shoot. The Model 97 would have no problems with that load either.

The .44 Special will do it! You will enjoy shooting the lighter loads for practice & general shooting too. Frank

I can't say for bears, but know for sure and for certain the 44 special works just fine on deer.
The heavier loads in the model 97 are pretty "snappy" but it will sure handle them. Mine is amazingly accurate. I got one for the reason you mention..long bullets will still fit in the cylinder. I have an LBT mold that throws a 265 gr. WFNGC bullet and it won't fit in the tight chambers of the FA. My Keith style bullets (RCBS mold) work great. Shoots jacketed bullets like a laser too.
Do I like the 44 special? Better than any other cartridge I have tried.

In a 97 I would take the 44sp over the 45 colt just for the ease of being able to use pretty much any bullet I like, where the 45 colt is limited to standard length bullets. Yea you can work around this some but it just easier to have a 44sp and not worry about it.
Besides in that little platform you really cant gain a whole lot in power in a 45 colt over the 44sp, some certainly, but in a 28oz gun its not going to be fun power to try and harness. In the 44sp you can easily run 250gr bullets at 1200fps and 300gr bullets at 1050fps and that would be pleanty for most any game in North America if you pick your shots and shoot it well.
I want one one of these days...
