I have one in the works from Jack built on a stainless .44 Special flattop. Will have an 4 5/8 oct barrel, a Bisley hammer and his extended grip frame. Should be done in time for X-mas! I think the .475 Special belongs to the same guy from castboolits. Bowen absolutely will not do it. I was talking with Mr. Bowen about octagon in a 44mag 50th NM flat top. He emailed this response. It appears that on the 357 50th Ann mid frame flat tops there is an issue with installing octagon. Probably the same with any NM midframe flat top. "Regrettably, I have not done an octagonal barrel installation on a new .44 Flat Top and do not have one in the building at the moment to check with an octagonal barrel. I do know that the one .357 I tried to fit with one was so marginal that I swore I'd never try it again. As you probably know, the angle described by the vertical centerline of the receiver and a line through the barrel center axis and tube boss axis is about 135 degs. which is exactly where it should be to be perpedicular to the lower angled flat on an octagonal barrel. The problem, with the .357 anyway, is that the ejector tube boss hole in the receiver face is probably on an angle close to 120--130 degs., leaving the tube quite eccentric or off-set to the barrel flat. If you can even get the tube to lay on the flat the result is somewhat unsightly. I would wish to suspend judgement until I can lay hands on a .44 FT recevier."

Whitworth The 475 Special is still at Jack's. Not exactly sure of the timeframe for finishing it. I think it is getting pretty close. I know he is almost done with another project that was inspired by Lloyd's Single-Six 41 Special he posted pics of at castboolits site. I obtained an old model Single-Six and sent it to Ruger to have the transfer bar safety done on it before sending it to Jack. Jack is turning it into a five shot 40 S&W/10mm convertible. It will be the little brother to the 480, but will have a birdshead brass grip frame. Everything else will be a copy of the 480. The 475 Special is on a S&W N-Frame and will as closely duplicate a 3.5 inch model 27 as possible, well, as much as the big hole in the barrel will allow. He also has a 500 S&W on the Ruger Maximum frame that I should see at any time. I also have him doing a 500 JRH on a Marlin 1894 to go with a short stainless 500 he did for me years ago. Lastly, he is fixing a 50 Alaskan on a Marlin that someone else that is supposed to know how to do them could not do properly. As you can tell, I like what Jack does, so I keep going back. I have a donor pre-safety Marlin 1894 that I am thinking about having him do a 480 Ruger with it to go with the mid-frame 480. As soon as I get any of this stuff, I will post pics. So you're the one who bought the .500 Smith! I've been wanting to see that one.

Whit,
If you are ever in Colorado, I be proud if you would do me the honor taking it out for a stretch.

The 475 Special is a shorter case than the 480 and intended to run 350gr bullets at 900fps or so. Aaron I'm a ballistics dummy, but would a 350gr pill at 900fps be enough for hunting? I'm talking deer, maybe/hopefully one day bear or hog? Part of why I'm attracted to the .480 is the ability to shoot huge bullets at less than wrist breaking velocities.

A 350 grain .475 bullet will have a sectional density of .221, awfully close to the SD of a 320 grain 45 bullet or a 280 grain 44 bullet. While a 350 doesn't seem like a heavyweight in the 475 bore it really has pretty good sectional density for a handgun bullet.

Aaron, I saw/held a 500 S&W built on a Ruger max frame when I was in Jack Huntington shop about a month ago. It had Turnbull CCH, 7-8"ish octagon barrel with dovetailed front sight and fancy walnut grips. Is that yours? If so, It is very very nice.

Thanks

Hamilton is on the conservative side as many know. Neither he or Clements will build a .480 on the mid frame. In fact David told me about a year ago that he wouldn't build a 5 shot .45 Colt on a mid-frame. Hamilton will, pic below. Neither one will do the oct barrels on them and if I recall correctly neither will Harton. At least not for me. I"ve tried

Bushog, that heavy 45 Colt is gorgeous! Is that a Harton?
