you guys do realize this is a 6 year old thread. I finally looked at a date when I saw the prices of $500 and under. Anything under $700 is a steal today. The 28 is developing a cult following. I love that trigger. Prescut I got mine for $449.95..... Other than the drag line on the cylinder, she is pretty nice shape. The action is very smooth and the lock up is tight with no end shake at all....

I was talked out of a very clean 28 some years ago. What a superb shooter, with the wonderful N frame action

The boys and I picked up a 6” in mint condition with original box, tools, and paper work from an old uncle. Sadly, we’ve got so much on the go here and other projects, that we’ve hardly looked at it.

Perhaps the post, like these pistols, is timeless. I realize this practice is frowned upon by the majority of you, and I may not even recommend it myself. However, credit where credit is due, I have the 28 to thank for helping me learn to incorporate my .357 loads using the #358429 in .38 special brass. As mentioned, the length of the cylinder will not allow the use of this bullet in the longer casing, and it has provided me with an excellent learning experience. A few members of this forum were very helpful in this endeavor. In my case, the 28 comes second only to my M 21 .44 special. My only coveted improvement would be to find someone who can reproduce the old grip adapters that could be ordered on the old 'Registered Magnums' as featured on Patton's Smith.

Had 2 28s over the years, decades ago. A 6" that was a terrific shooter, that I traded for a 4" 29-2 that was a good shooter. And I was issued a 4" as a Deputy Sheriff which returned to the SO Locker as soon as I could wrangle a 19 4" and attendant gear. The 4" was new and spit lead like crazy and it was heavy, especially after a 10-12 hour shift. Burnston love the photos, great way to use the 28. beautiful leather.

I love my 28-2. some yahoo went and drilled bigger holes in the cylinder and swapped out barrels though. it shoots pretty good as long as I do my part so I guess i'll live with it.

boxhead, tell me about that modified front sight. Home-job or did someone do the work for you? It looks very practical.

I've been showing up on Single Actions only occasionally for some time now and never ventured to the Double Action area. Enjoyed reading and looking at every post in this thread.
I've got two Model 28's that I acquired back in 2002/2003. I recorded each as costing $300 although one was in much better shape than the other. The one I thought needed some TLC went to Jim Stroh for converting to .44 Spec. He talked me into shortening the barrel to 5". I didn't know it at the time but he sent barrels out to be re-bored. He re-bored the cylinder, did a complete action job and reblued everything. It now has a slight plum cast to the frame and barrel but the cylinder is still a really nice blue. I kind of like the plum color. Probably not necessary but this gun only gets light or midrange loads.
The other 28 is still original. For some reason I've ignored it for a long time. I've been considering starting to cast and load for it after reading a thread over on Cast Boolits(sorry!) about shooting wadcutters. I have a H&G #50 mold that drops really nice bullets, plus I've been wanting to try powder coating.
I guess I'm going to have to check out Double Actions more often.

I am a huge fan of the S&W m28. I think I'm up to five with all of them being 4" with the exception of one 6". Here is my favorite 28-2 wearing some tulipwood Bear Hug grips,
