I think Elmer Keith & others crimped over the front driving band on those bullets & got along fine that way. Those were the 27s. However I think they have the same cylinder length, maybe the outdoorsman too? Frank At the time I had a stockpile of .357s loaded for my Ruger Blackhawk, several thousand rounds, all crimped in the crimping groove. I had shot some of these in my son-in-law's Smith Model 19, and was very surprised to find they didn't work so well in the Model 28, nor in my friend's Model 27. As I said, I got rid of it before I knew what I had. But since the new L-Frame guns have come out, don't miss it so much. In my opinion, the Model 586s I have, a 4" and a 6", are the ultimate DA .357 Magnum revolvers, bar none. Bob Wright Bob Wright

great revolvers. always loed my m27s. few months back i picked p a m28 that had been abused and neglected. no major problems though just need a little TLC and re-blue. actually bought it cheap enough that intended to convert it but i fooled around and shot it with my favorite load for m27 8&3/8 tube and now its only getting a reblue

I have this Highway Patrolman that is rougher than it looks. It likes all the classic Keith loads as well as Ray Thompson's 358156 Lyman bullet. It is my main working gun around the farm and it has taken everything from squirrels to coyotes.

I had a bunch of them back in the '70s. Several got converted to 44 specials by the gentleman in Delaware. One bad day, I turned down a transfer, got the wife pregnant, and got burglarized. Replaced the 27s and 28s and conversions with a couple of Model 29s and 25s. I hadn't seen or thought much about them after S&W dropped the ball...and N-frame 357s...but I bought a pair of the introductory 627s when they came out.
The last gun show I was at nice Model 28s were over $500

This one just came home from the gun show with me. $450 out the door with no grips (to speak of). (grips are from my 624)

I am an original 28 owner. My favorite load uses 2400 and the Lyman Keith cast boolit. I will not list my load but will refer you the Handguns 2001 annual and pg 41 for the load data. Please read the warning given by the author. I have fired 10,000's of rounds with that load and my 28 is a tight as the day I bought it new. No other revolver except for the pretty twin, the 27 and the new service colt(no longer made) are mentioned. I would not place the load in a newer 27 because of the thinner walls from having more than 6 rounds. The loads listed average 43000psi.

A few years ago, I bought a nice, well-used Model 28 from a friend...sent it to Smith to refinish in the original flat finish, and the hand had to be replaced to keep the cylinder from jumping. I have had some Hogue grips on it, as the original target stocks were in bad shape. Tried some Pachmyers, but punched the screw threw the other side and ruined them. I want some magna grips, or maybe some elk stag ones or micarta to resemble aged ivory. I carry it afield in an El Paso 1942 holster. Never plan to sell or convert this handgun.

I carried a 6" Model 28 back in the late 70's when I first became a LEO. I later switched to a 4" for easier packing. I foolishly sold the 6" when we were allowed to carry semi-auto's in the mid 80's. I just found this 6" Highway Patrolman at our local gun shop for a great price, so I snapped her up! It came with a set of Pachmayr grips, but I still had the target grips from my original Model 28, so I threw those on when I got home. I took her out to the range today and she was dead on at 25 yards off the bench.....

I HAD A 6 INCH 28 BUT I "LOANED" IT TO MY OLDEST SON. HE IS NOT A HANDGUNNER PER SE BUT HAS SHOT A PIG WITH IT, AND IT IS A VERY ACCURATE GUN WITH SOME FACTORY 158gr FMJ's. I HAVE A 5 INCH 27 THAT I RESCUED OUT OF A PAWN SHOP, IT IS COSMETICALLY CHALLENGED BUT IT IS A SHOOTING SOB. TOO BAD THE S&W N FRAMES DON'T HAVE LONGER CYLINDERS.

As much as I love Pythons and the high polish blue, and the checkering of the model 27.............these are without a doubt my favorite .357's MY FIRST NEW CENTER-FIRE SIXGUN DOUBLE ACTION STYLE (IT FOLLOWED THE RUGER BLACKHAWK .357 4-5/8") IN 1956-1957 WAS A 4" HIGHWAY PATROLMAN (PRE-28) FOR $85 (THE BLACKHAWK WAS $87.50) I'VE NEVER BEEN WITHOUT AT LEAST ONE OF EACH OF THESE FOR OVER 60 YEARS.

I’ve got a couple of those metal piercing rounds laying around here someplace,....and I do like 28’s. Had a friend of my dads that we called an uncle that had either a 28 or 27 6”. I remember it being extremely accurate and much easier to shoot than dads Blackhawk.

I own some S&W handguns. Models include; 19, 27 & 28 in 357. I like them all. The 28 is a workhorse so enjoy it!

you guys do realize this is a 6 year old thread.
I finally looked at a date when I saw the prices of $500 and under.
Anything under $700 is a steal today. The 28 is developing a cult following. I love that trigger.

I'm a long time fan of the Model 28. I got my first one about 30 years ago, a police trade in from Bachman Pawn in Dallas, remember those days? I've had several over the years, never sold one but I did outfit my sons with one apeice, my ex wife stole a 6 incher I had that shot like a laser. Currently have a sweet shooting 6 inch, and a 4 inch that has been tuned by Gemini out in Arizona. Terrible pics, but here they are. I also have Model 27s in 3 1/2 and 5 inch.
