I know I will raise the hackles of many, but I did not see the need to get a Lipseys 44 special when I already own a 4 5/8 SBH. I was put off that the sight blade in the sight was way off center and I wasn't going to take a chance that it was just installed off center or if it was set that way at the factory because to get the gun on paper during test firing. Ruger sends a cartridge with each gun because some states require it so I know it was fired at least once. I do like the flattop feature and fluted cylinder vs the protective wings on the sight and the unfluted cylinder of the SBH. If I didn't have the SBH which will have a Ruger Birds Head grip frame installed, I would definitely get one of the Lipseys though. The factory trigger and action are far better than my SBH out of the box. I would install a SBH hammer on the Lipseys if I bought one. PS: I used the money to buy a 1911 after reading on of JT's articles.

I picked up my 4-5/8 last Friday. It was ordered Dec 28th 2008 at a small dealer. Lipseys' sent me a 5-1/2 in a month ago which I refused and waited for the one I had ordered. What a great gun, I took one leg off the spring which really improved the trigger pull. The gun is accurate but I do not like the grips, too sharp and too thin. Fit and finish are excellent.

I am near ecstatic! My dealer friend notified me today (by phone) that my 5½" .44 Lipsey Special is on the way. I should have it by Thursday or Friday!! I'm holding my joy back just a bit ("many a slip twixt the cup and the lip") but just a couple of days and it should be in my hands. Well, I have ammo loaded, bullets cast, cases cleaned and this revolver fan is primed and ready to go!!
I'm about as silly over this is a kid waiting on Christmas but I am NOT apologizing! No sir!! In fact, when I get my Christmas present, I'll still be smiling from receiving my .44 Lipsey Special. (:<)).

The model ought to win revolver of the year.....seriously. I can't remember the last time a wheelgun generated this much excitement. Can't say I blame folks either considering we've been asking Ruger to build a 44 Special for years now. Hopefully it'll become a standard offering. -Lee www.singleactions.com

I picked my .44 Lipsey Special up from my dealer an hour or so ago. I am pretty dern happy (how about ecstatic!!) with it.
When I got it home I started thoroughly examining it. It is polished a good bit better than my 50th Anniversary .44 Magnum (which was NOT bad). The barrel cylinder gap will accept .004" and NOT accept .006" feeler (I'm happy with that). The cylinder throats are .4315" and are within .0005" of each other (that pleases me to no end). The chambers and thoats are SMOOTH (no tool marks). The trigger pull is a bit heavy but it and the creep will be resolved with a trigger job. The trigger is actually a bit better than the 50th .44 mag.
Of course, all of this is immaterial if it won't shoot. However, I have NO doubt that this one will be a shooter.
I'll let you all know how my trip to the range comes out.

I like the idea of the sequential serial numbers. I have 4 sons and 1 daughter for a total of 6 of them. #1 that is a lot of dough and #2 only 2 kids would have numbers next to mine. But still I like the idea if matching pieces, I will try to sell the wife on the idea. Maybe I should get her one...
I have not seen the Lipseys 44 Spec around here. I have a 50th 357 and love it. I have small hands and really dig the grip shape and thin grips. I just want a pretty wooden one, as I don't care for the looks of the black plastic/rubber one.
If Ruger makes this a factory item I may get one. Right now funds are too tight (especially for 6 of them!!!)

RUGER HAS ROSEWOOD GRIPS BOTH SMOOTH AND CHECKERED WITH MEDALLIONS--VERY REASONABLY PRICED IN THE $40-50 RANGE. THEY FIT THE ANNIVERSARY MODELS, THE NV, AND THE LIPSEY'S SPECIAL.

Mr Taffin, Thanks for the tip.
I like the look of them both, not sure if I like the smooth or the checkered more...... I like the Ruger medallion, it just looks right. They look like they are thin like the factory grips I like so much.

THEY ARE A MITE THICKER THAN THE FACTORY PLASTIC. I LIKE THE SMOOTH FOR EVERYTHING BUT THE CHECKERED, WHICH LOOK AWFULLY NICE, CAN CHEW ON THE PALM WITH HEAVIER LOADS.

I just picked up a 4 5/8" 44 Spec a few days ago and I have to agree on initial impressions. Fit of grip frame to gun is as good as I've seen and I like the weight of the steel frame. Now it is just wait until I return from delivering the daughter to Del Rio TX next week to decide if it stays here or goes down the road.
I'm still torn on whether to let one of you guys who appreciate it take it off my hands or to start getting parts for some changes. It would look pretty nice with the ribbed barrel, and a bisley swap out! ;D

I am with the rest of you on replacing the grips. I shot mine while it was still cold out and the factory grips were quite rough. I thought that would change with warm weather and my hands being less sensitive but that didn't happen. I haven't had the accuracy I had hoped for with cast bullets, I'm still trying, but with Brian Pearce's load of 19.0grs of H110 and a Hornady 240 XTP this gun will put ten shots in an inch and a half with eight of them clustered at 25 yards. And the rear sight will be centered. I did get a Simply Rugged holster for it but as thin as I am the holster covers my entire hip. I think I will need something like a Threepersons or Lawrence style. I may sell that holster, it's for a 5 1/2" model. Darn nice holster though!
