American Holly is indeed wood. It comes from a tree with the pointy leaves and red berries you see on all the Christmas wrapping paper. Now that's just funny! Got a chuckle out of me this morning, thanks Cary! Actually it wasn't meant to be funny. The wood does come from the American Holly tree. This tree does have the pointy leaves and red berries you see used in Christmas decoration. I guess I'm not understanding what you thought was so funny.

Cary's right.
I happen to have an old holly tree in my yard. The pointy leaves he mentions are outright prickly, and they will let you know they're there if you get too close on the riding mower. And they produce small red berries annually as well. The wood is white, with barely discernible grain.
The holly tree is celebrated in the venerable Christmas carol, "The Holly and the Ivy"...
The odd thing about the holly is, that unlike most trees, you can cut it down, flush with the soil, and it will sprout and eventually grow back. They're hard to kill out. Which is just as well, I suppose.
