I am looking to replace the factory grips on my New Flattop Ruger. I like the look of ivory, but can't afford it. So I have been looking at Tru-Ivory. Does anyone have an opinion on Tru-Ivory gun stocks?

I have a set of ultra aged on a satin nickle USFA and they look really nice took a little fitting but still turned out OK. You might also give a look at Privates Schultzs Holly grips I have three sets on different flattops and the look and feel great and his prices can't be beat

Eagle Grips synthetic ivory, I believe they call it Ultra-Ivory, is very good. It is not cast and has a grain similar to elephant ivory.

I've got a Python with genuine Ivory, an Army Special with Eagle Ultra-Ivory, and have handled a USFA that had Bar S Tru-Ivory.
While I'd rate the Eagle Ultra Ivory at "pretty good, certainly better than most". The Bar S Tru-Ivory looks pretty darned close to the real thing. Close enough where you'd REALLY have to look up close to tell it's not the real deal.
I'm considering getting some Tru Ivories for my customized 1860 Army... or maybe some smooth or low bark stags.
Haven't seen any Holly grips in real life, but the ones I've seen in pictures sure look good as well.
I've seen pics of some kind of Paper Micarta that looks great too. I think Craig C has a set on a Blackhawk that look fantastic.

Is Holly wood or some kind of imitation?

Holly is wood... Holly trees very blond clear wood that mellows like ivory.

Here is a picture of some Holly grips that I made for my Super. Holly makes a good looking grip but it is on the soft side, I carry this gun during bow season and they have a few battle scars on them. Mike

That's a beautiful OM Super, Mike. And those Hollys just set it off. I might add, from what can be seen in the photographs, you did a great job making them.

Is Holly wood or some kind of imitation? American Holly is indeed wood. It comes from a tree with the pointy leaves and red berries you see on all the Christmas wrapping paper.

I have a set of two piece TruIvories on my .44-40 USFA antique model. They are meant to mimic the John Wayne gun. I am very happy with them. I sent the grip frame to them and they fit very nicely. I have another USFA gun with one piece elephant ivory and the difference is negligible.

Is Holly wood or some kind of imitation? Yes - EVERYTHING in Hollywood is fake! ;D Seriously - IMO Tru-Ivory is the best fake ivory, it looks great.

A friend has a pair of 1861s gripped in American Holly. I slobber over them frequently. They are aging to look very much like Ivory of the same age. NICE.

This 38-40 has real ivory grips: Paid a bundle to have them made and guess what? I like Tru-Ivory better. It's cheaper, stronger, and looks just as good. Your best bet is to send them the gripframe for fitting (as opposed to doing it yourself). -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"
