But the base pin set screw is missing... I guess off to John it goes... built in '96 and still really tight. Maybe some sheep horn by Dustin? Also thinking about having the barrel cut to 6" and having a couple of gold bars put into the ramp on the front sight. Not sure if I want to shoot it without a set screw in the base pin... opinions? photobucket.com/475Linebaugh

Very nice. Sheep horn, a 6" barrel, and gold bars up front sounds like a plan. Hopefully you'll put some rounds through it before it goes back. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

I would not be afraid at all to shoot it without the screw in the base pin. I would not send it back for one either unless I just had to have the other work done too. I would just order one!
Looks like a great find! Congratulations.

Thanks guys... I'm really excited. She's got a little wear but that's how I like my girls anyway... nice and broken in! I must admit I am a bit hesitant to shoot it w/out a base pin set screw. Guess I could shoot it and just check for proper seating of the base pin btwn each round. The base pin cross bolt seems pretty tight and I took the lock assembly out and cleaned it up really good to make sure the cross bolt is engaging with the slot in the head of the pin. Also dropped a heavier spring into the cross bolt for an extra measure. Thinking about shooting some of the light factory Hornady 400g XTP's in it this weekend. Seems pretty tight, but I'm not sure about it... opinions on shooting w/out base pin set screw engaged?

Dan Tell me more big muddy... wonder if John still uses the same set screw he used in '96? Size, thread pitch, etc... I guess this might be as easy as a phone call... sure would love to shoot the hell out of it before I send it off for the other upgrades...

I would call him and ask to be sure, but I think the size/pitch would be the same. He would be able to tell you for sure. The length may need to be "adjusted" but I have done that myself, and I can screw up anything. It was pretty easy.

If it was fitted that base pin screw really isn't necessary.
I'd shoot it, what can really happen beside it coming forward and binding the cylinder a little? Push it back in and gas on it !
