Sure its worth it if you plan to keep the gun and like it and dont mind spending the money. It wont do much for its value if you intend to sell it, at least not to some, but if your dad gave it to you, you likely will want to keep it. Welcome to the forum!

Well, first, welcome. Second, I like that sixgun just the way it is. Shows character. I always have a bit more respect for a sixgunner whos sixgun shows he has been shooting the snot out of it!!
Yeah, you can have it reblued. Be advised, a proper blue job entails enough handwork to easily cost more than the value of your sixgun.

Welcome to the forum. The gun you have is from your Dad and he probably put a majority of the wear and dents on it for good reasons and use. Myself barring a failure that would require a reblue I would just leave it as is and shoot it. I would look at the wear and either, I was there when they happened, which is very likely or wonder how or what he was doing with it that made the mark. Then let my imagination run wild thinking about possibilities.
There would be no way for anyone else to put a value on the gun. Its value to me would be priceless.
I have one such Smith & Wesson in my safe at this time and it is a 41 mag model 57.
Sometimes I go to gun shows looking specifically for guns with the finish like the one you have. I know that someone was able to use it as it was intended.

Nice guns!
Welcome!
I second what the other guys said, basically, if you want to blue it, do it. If not, don't. It won't be cheap. A "cheap" blue job will probably not be as satisfying as what it currently looks like.
If you're going to do it, do it right.

Rolo17, welcome... I agree with the other forum members in that if it were me, I'd leave that Abilene just like she is... a shooter... she looks like a fine wine, aged...
Judging by the pictures, she's got a lot of dings and scratches on the metal, which will require a lot of polishing to remove... many of the more notable gunsmiths that do refinishing work will charge you on the line of $50-$100/hour for polishing work... which in this case will add up quickly, before the bluing even starts. If I had to guess your looking at around a $500 min re-blue charge for a classic high polish finish. And then the current aged/weathered grips won't match it, so there goes another $100 minimum, plus all the shipping charges, etc. You could buy a new gun in the end...
I actually prefer how she looks right now, but that's just me. That gun sitting in a nice weathered western drop loop holster with a money belt would be right out of the late 1800's... classic and nostalgic.
Good luck with whatever path you chose... but either way, keep shooting that Abiline!

Nothing wrong with honest wear. Especially if you're a shooter and not a collector. I have an old Ruger Single Six I bought as a kid in 1974(?). I pulled it out last year and was considering a reblue, as it's pretty worn. Then I got to thinking about a few of the dings it and its Lawrence holster got on a particular canoe trip in the late-70s, or the tumble it took while I was running a trapline with a high school buddy in the mid-70s. I decided I didn't want to lose all those precious memories, so I put it back in the safe.

You could buy a brand new one for the refinish costs!

I would reblue it, color case harden the hammer and trigger. Then have some fancy stocks fitted to it. Nothing wrong with honest wear but there's nothing wrong with a wonderfully done refinish either. www.apwcogan.comwww.fordsguns.com
