The .500 WE is a superb cartridge. There's no real need to get the convertible .50 AE cylinder, because the WE can easily be downloaded to .50 AE "accuracy level" loads, and will perform a bit beyond the AE "max charge " loads. It's accurate, and pretty much adequate for hunting anything. Most convertibles that you see are ones that were .50 AE's originally that were retro-fitted with the WE cylinder after it was introduced. Here's my convertible: And a couple of straight WE's :

I was thinking down the road on the 50AE cyl, in case the 500WE falls on its face, thought the50 AE ammo might be easier to find, seeing that it has been around alot longer.

something to think about though it may not matter is with the 50ae needing to be taper crimped I would think bullet pull could become a problem. Again I may be way off in my thinking

I love mine. If I had a 50 AE I would get a cylinder in 500 Wyoming but personally didn't see the need for a 50 AE cylinder with the Wyoming. I can load the 500 up or down to do anything without the problems of the 50 AE, taper crimp, head spacing on the case mouth, etc. For the cost of an extra cylinder you can buy a fair amount of 500 brass. Good luck with your purchase, its a great round.

Since I own a 50AE BFR,if it was me,I would buy the 500WE and stock up on extra brass. These things arent all that hard on brass in the first place, you will loose more brass from cracks at case mouth from crimping at about the 30 to 35th loading mark. I will also be willing to bet that after you play with the WE a while the AE cylinder will seldom see daylight. And bigboredad, you have not experienced frustration untill you mess with taper crimping 350 grain bullets. Since I got the JRH cylinder I havent even taken the AE cylinder out of the case. All AE's I load go to the Desert Eagle.

a few months back on gunbroker there were quite a few bfr's in 50 ae for very good price. The taper crimp was a big reason I did not get it in hind sight I say oops I could of sent it off for a different cylinder

And that is exactly why I bought one of them, and promptly had another cylinder made.

Considering that you can find the JRH's for $8-900, and the .50AEs were going for $700+, and it's $180+ for a cylinder plus shipping both ways, if you didn't want a .50AE to begin with you are better off to just buy the JRH.

Ken, that octagon barreled one looks great. If I ever owned one like that, it would probably wear black micartas you tired of that old thing yet.............

Hey Glenn, speaking of micartas, where are the pictures of your new shoes on the .475?

Glenn, As you recall it had black micarta when you owned it. I sold them and had Bob fit these, as so many of mine had black micarta. Nope, not tired of it yet. I usually buy guns, not sell 'em. My hundred dollar offer for your old 58 with all the defects is still open ... I'll bring the cash to Raton, if you're ready.
