Will the alloy grip frames from the New Model Blackhawks and Single Sixes fit the New Model Flattops? I've got a Flattop 44spl and a Flattop 45LC/45ACP that I'd like to lighten up by replacing the steel frames with an alloy frames. Are there any alterations that will need to be made?

Screw holes will match up. You may need to grind on a spot or two but nothing that is part of the external mating surfaces.

Over on one of the Ruger forums, several guys have done it. As I recall, there can be an issue where the two "ears" of the grip frame that come up on either side of the hammer may extend up past the back of the frame (above the two rear screw holes). It can fixed by filing/grinding, but the grip frame will have to be touched up or refinished (or polished in the white).

1st off , I did it on a new 44 spl. Vaquero but I think It's the same as flattop. It has the new cylinder alignment system and that's the beef. The hand/lifter has grown a knot on the bottom that fits into a small grove in the grip frame. More science to it than a mere relief /clearance cut as I did that and the gun locked up tight as soon as I opened the loading gate. Too many issues ,I went back to the orig, grip frame. In hindsight I believe if one was ready to change the hand to an old model or deactivate the new cylinder aligning plunger it could be done . The frame ears are a non issue and just take them off.

I've been tempted to swap out the frame on my Lipsey .44 Spl, as I don't like the extra weight, but I'm not that averse to the extra 6 oz!

I have done it just to see.....
I had to file off two alignment "tabs" on the alloy frame that are not used on the new guns, thus no recess for them. Of course you need another strut and main spring without the internal lock. I did not have any issues with the pawl however.
