Because of the difference in angles between the sights and the bore axis, I would expect any gun to recoil in the direction of the sights, if they're being used. I can see flaws with that theory, and believe the grip angle also has bearing on the situation too.
Change my answer to: Ah hell, I don't know, I'd have to try it.

Curt, Jim Taylor turns the sixgun upside down. He does not "hang" himself upside down from trees... Yep, you are correct, it still reminded me of his trick shot...I tried it today but fell out if the tree on account if the blood rushin to my head... I need some more practice but I will be ready when zombies overtake the perimeter!

Well I tried it today. I flipped the gun over and gave it a blast. It recoils down toward the front site.

Since sights are regulated to compensate for gravity in normal situations, those of you action movie types (hanging upside down from rafters, trees & such) would have to aim ...uhhmmm..above your target.
Also, if you were shooting (normally) up or down a steep hill you will have to hold the sights over your targets to hit them.

It only recoils "up" because it's levering off the grip, it doesn't have anything to do with "up" being up. Holding the gun at a different level than the bore line cause a pivot point. If you could hold the gun by the barrel only (and somehow make it fire) it would recoil straight back. A traditional part of our Nor'Easter Sixgunner get togethers.

.
I don't know if it is fair to possum to be discussed in the same thread as chickens.
Possum have a long and noble history of hanging around.

What if a mime fired the pistol upside down in the forest and no one was around to hear it? ?

Just don't ask the possum to cross the road. He seems to have passed his road crossing skills on to the armadillos... On the upside down thing. Which side of the earth you are on? Where ever you are, wait 12 hours and, relatively speaking, you and the gun are upside down along with the possum, chicken, and armadillo.
