Local gun store has a Colt New Service for a god price. It needs a cleaning but appears sound. My question is about the Patridge front sight. Rear sight is a notch in the back of the top strap. Can any one tell me if this is unusual for this gun? Most pictures show a quarter-moon front sight. Mike

FIRST, WELCOME TO THE FORUM! I WILL NEVER SAY NEVER BUT. I FEEL AS IF THE FRONT SIGHT HAS BEEN MODIFIED OR REPLACED TO A PATRIDGE TYPE. I HAVE SEEN MANY MODIFIED IN THIS FASHION. ALMOST ALL OF THE FIXED SIGHT NEW SERVICES HAVE CLIPPED, HOOK BILLED AS YOU SAY QUARTER MOON FRONT SIGHTS. I BELIEVE A FEW MIGHT HAVE HAD HALF MOON FRONTS. GETTING A COLT LETTER ON THE GUN MAY BE ABLE TO TELL YOU. THESE ARE GREAT GUNS AND ONE OF THE BEST DOUBLE ACTIONS EVER MADE. SO WHAT CALIBER AND BARREL LENGTH? IF YOU BUY IT POST US SOME PICS AND A RANGE REPORT. I'M SURE YOU WILL ENJOY IT. ALL THE BEST & WELCOME AGAIN. MB

Colt offered it as an option at the request of numerous LE and magazine folks. It may well be factory

The original sights on the New Service were the hawkbill front and U-notch rear. The front sight was of the inverted Vee style. Somewhere during the twenties or so, the sights went to a square notch rear and Patridge front sight. The front sight profile had a serrated sloped blade. So far as I know, only the Shooting Master had the U-notch and bead Paine type sights.
Not sure of the dates, but the M1911 .45s with Patridge sights dat after 1921, I believe.
