I have jumped around on what cal to build. After talking to John Gallager I am planning on having him build me one of his long cylinder 44 mags. I want to build it as a hog hunting back up. We hunt alot at night with dogs so I want to put a set of laser grips I have sitting aroung on it. Here is my problem. The predator is on the bigger gripframe (square trigger). I need the smaller frame round trigger for the grips. So to start off I would have to have the grip frame swapped. So you guys think I should start my build with the predator or should I go buy a 44 with the right grip frame to start with. What are you guys opinion on the Predator as it is.

I'd leave the Predator as is and find a vanilla SBH for the build. The short barreled ones come with the grip frame you are looking for too...

Can't you get a set of laser grips in the right size? If so, I'd swap out the grips and leave the Predator alone.

Have you shot the crimson trace grips with full house 44 mags?
I would do that before I built a gun around them.
I had a set on a 44 mag. Uncomfortable with the heavy stuff.

Suggest you leave the Predator as is. Swapping grip frames can get expensive if they arent a exact match. More, have done the long cylinder custom SA thing more than once or even twice, I would suggest for your purposes you find a 4" Redhawk in 44 mag or even 45 Colt. They are bull strong, and already come with a long heavy cylinder. If you get in the middle of some big hogs or other some such that can bite back you might find the DA feature handy. Here is mine, tuned by Harton.

Thanks guys for your opinions. I will start looking for a new blackhawk then. I too thought about a redhawk maybee that is the direction I need to go. But I just love the single actions. I guess I was just truying to save alittle money and start with something I already had.

I fully understand a guy who loves SA sixguns. But I just can't speak highly enough of the 4" Redhawk.

I was really wanting to put laser grips on this project. Just seems like a good idea for a back up especially since we hunt at night some with dogs. Kind of gets a little crazy at time when you got half a dozen dogs baying. Just checked and they do make them for a redhawk.

I have a long cylinder 45 John built that I love. He did action job, freespin, and front sight the way I wanted so I could change it using 3/8" dovetail in the ramp after cutting the blade off. Can use fire sites, brass or white bead. Great for old eyes.

I believe those MagnaPort customs are generally well thought of.. Some even quite valuable.. You might consider selling the beast to help fund your project.. Have you shot a 44 mag with the XR3-Red grip frame? People who have generally have strong feelings about it one way or the other.. Often when replacement of the MR3D with the XR3-Red is considered on the SBH, weight is the issue and the alloy grip frame is what they want.

I have a flattop 44 mag with a XR3 grip frame on it too. You don't need a long cylinder in it since the standard cylinder will handle a stout enough load to spin it around in your hand and bury the hammer in your wrist. Ask me how I know....

And this from a man who, if the grass hasn't been cut, can easily be mistaken for a fire hydrant...

I really do not plan on shooting real stout loads. I really feel I could build a nice 44 special and do fine. But that little guy on my shoulder keeps telling me. If you are going to send it off to get customized put the big block in it so to speak. Plus I like the looks of the filled up frame the long cylinder gives you. I was actually told when I bought the predator that it was in a magazine give away that included a bear hunt. I bought it for a steel back in college. I was working at a gun shop and the owner liked me and let be buy it for what the store gave for the trade.... 300 bucks. Best deal I have ever got on a gun. Guy put the money towards a stock stainlees abolt browning. Do not know if the magazine story is true but who cares for 300 bucks.

Oh now I see. You're just after the long cylinder look. Let me ask you this, How does your predator shoot in present form?
