I spoke with Jack Huntington today about a few things regarding my first custom. (I'm getting closer!) He asked me what I like for a finish in a blued gun regarding polish. I hadn't really thought about it much up to that point but realized that I kind of like a more subtle/subdued look I guess as opposed to a high gloss mirror type of finish. He mentioned a "matte blue" that he has done. I'm aware of a matte/bead blasted finish on a stainless guns but can't say that I know for sure what a "matte blue" gun looks like. Do any of you guys have any pics of what a matte blue gun would look like?

I think there may be varing degrees of polish between bead blasted and a high polish blue. I have a Clements and a Reeder that I'd call matte blue..

Mark, that is simply gorgeous! I'm partial to high polish on a custom sixgun.

Wow! You may have just changed my mind Funny thing about this custom business... Just about the time you think you know what you think you want you realize you think you want something else... I think... It's all part of the fun!

The only "matte" blue I like is that of the old S&W M28's, a dull brushed finished. Bead blasted matte does nothing for me. As noted above, go polished.

Make mine high polished, matte blue, and everything between. I don't know how I could pick just one. Same thing for polished and matte stainless.. Let's throw in the polished and matte hard chrome stuff too.. There just is no end. Praise the good Lord for the blessing of living in such a country and having the economic means to have them ALL...

My taste would be toward something at least as polished as the stock Ruger blued finish. I wouldn't want to go more matte than that on a custom. I mean, you're having all that other stuff done to it, might as well have it polished out better than a factory gun.
That's just my preference, though.

Nice looking finish. I don't care for the writing but the finish looks darn nice in this pic.

I wish blue (majority) meant blue. The salt black finish of most guns makes you tired after you look at an old Smith or a Python. I know many of you have read Bowen's book that mentions charcoal burnishing back in the day to describe on a grand Industrial Revolution scale how it was done, hopefully many of you even own one of them. True carbona commands a crazy premium. Black, eh.
