My boy (14) and I just got back from a fun plinking session. Took my Ruger SS Bisley .45 Colt, Cimarron Sheriffs .45 Colt, Taylors Uberti .38-40 and Beretta M9. Yes not a saa, but a damn fine reliable pistol. My little Cimarron smoked really well today with several loads as did the Ruger. 7.2-7.4 grs of W231 with a 250-255 RNFP or SWC seems to be some of those almost magic loads that nearly every .45 Colt likes. These two love it. Still working up loads for the Uberti and same thing there, 231 seems to be the powder of choice with some unknown brand .401 RNFP and some Desperado .403 dia as well. Chamber mouths on this gun are big, like .405-406. Strangely though .401 bullets seem to shoot almost as well as .403 and of course they load easier. The .403 loads need to be persuaded to fully seat some times. I use Win and Starline brass which usually run thin at the neck. .401 loads just drop in and I like that. I am going to get a sample pack of .401 soft cast from Desperado and try them. Unlike my Cimarron .45 the Uberti sights are not on for windage and thus will require I do something about the front sight unless I stumble on the perfect load. So far however everything shoots to the left by a fair amout. Elevation is fine however. I like to do like Ross Seyfried did on his revolvers and put an angled flat where the rounded off part of the front sight is and then file grooves in it. This cuts down that awful glare of the Colts style sight. Seems everytime I shoot these guns, the sun is bouncing rays off the front sight so bad I can hardly see the sucker so once I settle on a load I will do that. A bit windy I know but its great to remind myself why I love single actions, and the .45 Colt in particular!
