Okay panel of experts. You keep giving me good info. I'm in need of your guidance once again... I am considering buying this 50th Ann. FlatTop and having it Bisleyized into a 500L. I've read that the serial number needs to be 1/32 from the frame window. The guy says the it's 1/16th on this gun He just emailed me some pics. What do you think? Would this gun be a good "sacrificial lamb"? I can get it for about 400 bucks. Oh, and of course I welcome any input regarding Bisleyizing this NM Flattop. Pros and cons. I smugged out a couple of the numbers. Might look pretty nice as a 500L Bisley with Octagon barrel and some sheep horn.

I would email the photo to Bowen and ask him if the serial number location will work. Afterall, he will be the one customizing it for you.

Just when I was wondering what he was doing with all that money! There is a lot of potential sitting there John... Looking forward to seeing the finished product. Have we thoroughly hijacked this thread or what? The decision maker on the serial number location will be the builder.. Clements says 1/32. FYI Hamilton Bowen has a schetch at the bottom of the page here: www.bowenclassicarms.com/news.html

No pros or cons with that frame. It's every bit as good as a 'humped' New Model. And octagonal and sheep horn would look great. Keep us posted. -Lee www.singleactions.com

I always figured this OM would make a nice 5 shot custom since it has the early style S/N with plenty of real estate above it. The duh moment was when I realized the screw is the limiting factor on OM frame opening.

Those 50th models are hard to find with the serial # placed right. I've spent a LOT of time looking..Especially the .357s. The .44 Special mid frame #s are better. Use a caliper to measure it. I have a few .44 large frames that won't make it.
That one in the photo looks awfully close.
Better to be sure and pay an extra $100 if you're going to build a $3000 revolver.
Just my experience.

Hamilton Bowen bought a Bisley I had for sale on Rugerforum based on the SN location. I wish I still had the pictures of the SN for a reference.

Thanks. I had him double check with calipers. He says it's .0410 so it looks like I'm good to go. It sounds like it needs to be .030 min.
