Thanks for all the input gents. Ya, it won't be a safe queen. In fact I'll be selling a safe queen to fund part of this project. A 2nd ed. 1950 Colt Match Target 22 6inch, excellent condition, if anyones interested. I see (and use) my guns as tools but sure like the looks of them as well, blue and stainless both. But I must admit. I'm really drawn to these blue guns w/sheep horn grips of various shades. This will be my first custom, I'm leaning towards blue, traditional with some sheep horn bling  Here's my stainless 45 Rugers.... I pack the 45 Colt BisHunter in a Wyoming Combo holster. I converted the 45 Colt Redhawk to a 454 with a SBH cylinder and had it magnaported. I've since stripped and sanded/reformed the grips for my hand. Not quite as pretty as in the pic but hey, it's a tool. It's my backup gun and always rides on my hip in a Simply Rugged pancake whether I'm rifle or handgun hunting, hiking, fishing or pickin berries. My sheep hunting rifle is a synthetic/stainless Kimber MT. My 454 levergun is stainless as well. I think might be time for a case of the blues  45's with some 355gr food....  |

Snyd,
KNowing the conditions where you hunt--having seen many of your hunt reports on the outdoor forums, I would certainly say you need a stainless a stainless gun for real use purposes. That said, I agree that sheep horn just doesn't look the same on a stainless gun, and the cool think with a custom over some 1st generation colt or two-digit flat top, you can reblue without worry of hurting collector value.
If you make it down Kenai way, I have several of John Linebaugh's conversions in 45 and 475L. Only 500L I have is a Bowen Nimrod, but have a few others from Clements and Harton you can see, hold, and shoot to help narrow down who you want to send your $$$ to.
I'll PM you my e-mail and cell. All I would ask in return is a few more of those 45 hammer's. Really enjoyed running through my handloads with those.

My preference is a Blued gun, especially if its a Colt blue, I have stainless guns also. I never worry about better protection with the stainless as I clean, oil and wax all my guns after using them. If you are the type of guy that hates gun maintainece then by all means get stainless. IMO there is nothing prettier than a deep blue with a nice set of attractive grips regardless of the type of gun. Kind of like which looks better a white 63 split window Corvette or a 3 mile deep black one.

I like blued guns, but stainless I don't really have to worry about holstering and worrying about the finish of a blued multi-thousand $ gun. My preference currently is stainless.

Great points about the stainless. I could just add another shiny gun to the fold! Maybe a Bowen Nimrod.
The offer sounds great. We'll see how things go this summer. We might head down that way. Shoot me your mailing address again as well. Dang I forgot about sending you those boolits. How long ago was that? I don't even remember your handle over at aod forums.... I guess I'm gettin old!

I'd be willing to bet that Axe character has guns with stainless and blued parts on the same gun. And brass. And aluminum.
He has an obvious preference but it's not helpful in answering your question: he likes them all.
Come to think of it, we all do.

I'm getting ready to buy a base gun for my first custom. I've currently got stainless guns and like them. For some reason I'm leaning towards a blue gun for this. I've got my sites set on a Linebaugh 500L. Any of you blue guns regret not going with stainless? What you have to take into consideration is whether one gets a blued gun due to appearance preferences or function realities. If one does not mind the up-keep of a blued gun, and prefers that color, then the one willl probably get a blued gun, although that is getting harder. Now if constant up-keep is a problem than the one will probably go stainless or perhaps hard-chrome. I have never liked silver guns starting with cap-guns as a child. If I had to have a gun that was going to be continually subjected to sweat or salt air, I would get stainless do to practicality. Some years back I re-blued (hot) a Grizzly .45 Win. Mag,, myself, at the same time I had a .50AE Grizzly in hard-chrome. I checked around to find how hard it is to remove hard-chrome and decided to simply live with it, or maybe sell it later. |

Me, I like the way blued wears, as in off. Adds character, which I prefer. I hate new firearms and vehicles - always worrying about the first scratch. Once it happens, all is well. Stainless on the other hand doesn't change, barring something catastrophic.

I’m exceptionally late to the party here, but I just wanted to compliment you for mentioning how you enjoy the way blued guns age as they wear. I haven’t seen this discussed much and I couldn’t agree more with the sentiment. Stainless guns don’t age with the grace and show their age like well worn blued guns. |

Simple. Get your full custom done in a deep beautiful blue with the sheeps horn, maybe even a touch of engraving. Shoot it and enjoy it.
But when the weather is bad or you're humping brush, carry the BFR you also need just for the rough stuff.
That's what I do.

The only stainless guns I own are the ones that Ruger didn’t make in carbon steel, my two Hunters. The rest are blue. I’m more hunter than shooter, more into acquisition than collecting, and I have no custom guns. While the maintenance of a stainless gun is attractive, a blue gun is more desirable (to me) in the field. That may just be in my mind, as I haven’t polled the animals to see what they think. And I heartily agree that there is no better looking handgun than a deep blue with ram’s horn grips. |
