I have been reading and digesting as much as I can regarding the availability of brass for the Herters 401 Powermag. Apparently, this is a rare-bird and when found, it is a little on the expensive side. Alternative methods have been shown to make the round from 41 magnum, 30-30, and 35 Remington, and the like. Then, it hit me: two of the predecessors to the Powermag was the 401 Boser Special and the 401 Eimer, wildcat rounds based on the 401 Winchester Self Loading Cartridge. I did a paper side by side comparison. With the exception of the length of the SL ctg and its semi-rimless nature, this brass MIGHT do the trick. If I understand correctly, the 401 SL might have a slightly smaller case volume than the PM. However, a resize and a trim die later, it wouldn't be too much apart from the Powermag. the hook is, will the small rim diameter of the SL preclude its use in a Powermag cylinder?
As an aside, I always wondered why there wasn't a revolver built on the Winchester Self Loading cartridge? Everyone on the 40-41 bandwagon seems to keep passing by an obvious alternative. There is an ample amount of reloading components available, but we'd be competing with the 401 Winchester SL boys on the availability of these items. But the 401 SL is definitely up there with any 10mm magnum type round. DW41F

Your logic and design is fine and in fact when I traded for my 401 it came with 6 rounds made from 401. The fly in the ointment is finding any more 401 brass. It's out there but its an expensive route to take. Even my 41 mag brass is to valuable to me so I take the 30-30 route.

You're better off making it from 41 Magnum. 401 Win is expensive and hard to find. While my method does require a straight 0.426" die and a big press, it's the fastest and cheapest way to make PowerMag. Minimal trimming and you may or may not have to turn the rim. Even if you do, you're only removing a few thousandths. www.singleactions.com/401HerterPowermagCaseForming.html-Lee www.singleactions.com
