i am saving money to have john gallagher build me a long cylinder 44 magnum bisley. i am going with octagon barrel of the five and one half inch variety. i think i want some really nice walnut stocks or some barkless elk horn. what i cant decide on is if i want the cylinder frame color case hardened or the gun totaly rust blued. i live in the same county as a gentleman by the name of charles danner who rust blues and he talks as though the finish is extremely durable. what i would like to see is the contrast of the different finish options. please feel free to show and tell.

Rust blue is nice. We have done some barrels on rolling blocks ourselves. Never tried a revolver. It is a pain in the a** to do and will run you about the same as CCH. It seems really durable and has a rich color.

This gun is rust blued. A more subtle tone finish I would say.

Notice that King6's #5 appears to actually be blue in color. The other so called "blue"s are actually black.

While I don't own a handgun so finished I do have a few rifles. In my eyes there is no nicer finish when combining both beauty and durability. I do not have a good close up but it is a nice soft finish with just the right amount of luster. I debated doing it on a build currently underway but I wanted all of the work performed by the builder and he does not rust blue. Here's an attempt at what it looks like on a couple of my rifles. I say do it.
