Great pictures, and a good explanation. Who was the first smith to come up with that type of latch system.

It was first found on Elmer Keith's #5 44 Special revolver. He had several men such as Croft, Sedgley (sp) and some others work on the gun if I am not mistaken. Since then TLA used it on their Improved #5 revolvers. Hamilton Bowen and Alan Harton have both replicated it as well. There may be others but these are the ones I have heard of.

and the set screw in the bottom should retain the spring loaded detent (locky thing if your prefer). I am going to try to do one on a 44 project.

What would you guys estimate the average price of putting this type latch on a custom.. Looking at Bowens stuff it looks to me like $1000-$1500. A few unique parts and a lot of labor.

Gary,
I have a pile of original TLA latches if you are interested in using that on your project.

Steve, I'd like to have a couple of those for future projects - email me, brother!
IMO a sixgun HAS to have the #5 latch mechanism to qualify as a #5.

I am pretty sure that I read, many years ago, that Elmer's #5 lock idea came from a similar lock on a Sharps rifle. JT, do you know? Bob

That would be great Cubrock. PM me with what I owe you and where to send funds. I can use it as a pattern.
