Personally I would, and did, go with a custom Ruger in .500 linebaugh. with the custom you can have it any way you want it.
In my eyes the biggest reason to go with a .500 over a .510 is if you dont cast or if you want to use jacketed bullets. I

Thanks again guys. At this point I am still trying to wrap my brain around a 4-shooter, might be hard to go there. My current woods packing backup gun is a 4" Redhawk I converted to a 454. But, my hunting rifle is a 3 round Kimber 325 so I'd be picking up an extra round!
I won't be putting a scope on it. I've got a scoped 45 Colt Bisley Hunter.
I think if I were gonna drop the cash at this moment it would be on a 5.5, barrel band, blue 500L with custom dall sheep horn grips (since I live in Alaska and I'm a sheep hunter). And maybe even some bling like color case hardened frame and some carvings on the grips like a griz on one side and a sheep on the other. ok, now I'm gettin too fancy but hey, if it's custom, may as well go big huh?
The low pressure of the 500L sounds intriguing. I'm still learning.
But, I'm always looking for a deal. Got a couple local gunshows coming up. Might find a ruger donor gun or even an FA to convert. In the meantime I've got a safe queen to sell that will help fund part of this. a 1950 Colt Woodsman Match target 22 in excellent shape with rare grips. anyone interested?

Thanks for the input so far. I'll mention again though. I don't want a bfr. FA or Bisley. Back to the FA.... thoughts on packing with 5? I been bitten by the 50 bug hard for a couple of years now. I started with a 7 1/2 500SW BFR. Next came a 8 3/8" x-frame. Next came a 7 1/4" Ruger 500Maximum. Next came a 5 1/2" custom FAs 500JRH. Next came a 2 3/4" x-frame. Next came a 6" Custom Bisley in 500Linebaugh Next came a 7 1/2" FAs 50AE that I sent back to FAs for a 500WE cylinder. Next came a 4 3/4" FAs 50AE that was also send back for a 500WE cylinder. My latest is a 6" Reeder stretch frame in 500S&W. If I could only keep one I would choose the 7 1/2" FA's with both cylinders. In-fact if I could only have 2 I would choose the 4 3/4" FA's and the 7 1/2" FA's. It's really nice knowing that FA's will fix anything that might go wrong. Keep your eyes out for deal in a FA's 50AE then send it in for a 500WE Cylinder, and get grips, sites, ect.. for it with brass and reloading dies when you can afford it. The BFR in 500JRH would be a distant second.(I still want one of these!) Customs are great, just not as practical. P.S. DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT CARRYING A FA'S FULLY LOADED YOU WILL HURT YOUR SELF, ITS A 4 SHOT!!!! You and I have the same .50 cal disease!

Thanks for the input so far. I'll mention again though. I don't want a bfr. FA or Bisley. Back to the FA.... thoughts on packing with 5? I'm a fan of the .500WE, and the Mdl. 83's. Unless you're lucky in the "used" market, the FA is available faster and cheaper, with outstanding quality. HOWEVER, if 6 shots (or more than 4) is important to you, then you want a custom Ruger. I went through a period of carrying 5 in a FA .454 with the hammer on the "safety" notch (which it isn't). I was lucky, never had a problem, but I regard it as a stupid decision. The 83 is a 4 shot gun. After the first shot, if time allows, you can flip the loading gate open, drop a round into the empty chamber, and have 4 more immediately ready to go. Only ONCE in a very very long hunting career have I required more than 4 shots on a very large animal ... and there was plenty of time to load on the fly, in that instance. But please read my lips: THE MDL. 83 IS A 4 SHOT! Appetite whetters: This last one is an AE / WE convertible.

A Nimrod styled 500 Linebaugh is still hard to beat. Kind of the classic .50-cal revolver. They're not cheap, but what you get is something built to your liking. Definitely the sort of custom you can hand down to future generations: That said, I also like the 500 JRH by Magnum Research. I recently had a chance to shoot one and was really impressed. Enough so that I plan on getting one in '12. It's a lot of gun for a grand and out-of-box BFR accuracy is first-rate. -Lee www.singleactions.com

beautiful guns there ken. I sure like the looks of the octagonal barrel on the first FA. Got it, FA 83 is a 4 shot if you're packing it.
Lee, is that a Nimrod by Bowen?

Thanks Whit. I'm the noob around here. Just trying to keep up Hey, general question. Do most smiths/craftsman prefer new guns for a custom bigbore or does it matter?

Doesn't matter, really, particularly if you plan on having refinished (blued), color-case hardened, etc.

Doesn't matter if you're changing the barrel and cylinder. As long as the frame is stout and the internals are good, you're set. -Lee www.singleactions.com

If you do end up with a model 83, you might want to give Ken a PM asking about his front sites, while I've been playing with the express sites I am shooting better groups with more conventional sites and his front site is the best Ive tried.
