I've got the itch for a Fifty and am heading down the road to scratch it. I'm not interested in a BFR or a 500 S&W or a 475. I want a Fifty in either a FA or Ruger. I know that FA does the 500we or I could get a 500 JRH in a custom FA or a 500 Linebaugh in a Ruger conversion. I cast and load my own so a proprietary cartridge like the 500we doesn't bother me nor would the .510 L.
I am aware of the differences in the actions regarding the FA 83 and NM Rugers and I do like the idea of the 5shot ruger on the hip as opposed to a 4rnd 83. I have a 45 Bisley Colt Hunter and like the Ruger Bisley grip frame. I haven't shot a FA but have fondled a couple and the quality is obvious. I've always drooled/dreamed of one. How safe is the hammer safety position on the 83? This will not be a safe queen gun and I'm not getting it to sell it or have as an investment. I'll pack it here in Alaska and shoot it has much as I can.
Regarding the JRH. Would it be better suited to a longer cylinder in a Ruger as opposed to an FA or is it an issue?
Thanks for your input and opinions.

The BFR is available in .500 JRH now too.
I'd go for the Ruger custom or the BFR.

Personally, now that the BFR is available in 500 JRH, that's the way I'd go. If cost was not an obstacle, I'd opt for FA. If cost was not a factor and aesthetics were paramount (blue steel, CCH), then I'd go with a custom Ruger. If I was Axehandle, I'd go with all the above. ;D

It works well in the Freedom. I shot the first one built and it handled well and was really accurate. It is a cartridge that works well in a custom Ruger, too. My BFR in .500 JRH is a great revolver (incredibly accurate), but I would prefer a Bisley grip frame, and it will be getting one soon. It all boils down to preference. If your heart is set on an FA, then by all means get one. Now imagine this with a Bisley grip frame. It would be hard to find fault with (except for the aluminum front sight!).

The Bisley gripframes don't look quite right on the BFR. The lines near the hammer don't flow like they do on a Ruger.
And Jim is gonna give you trouble... :-)
Have you tried the pachmayr decellerator grips? Mine work great and look decent too.

Whoa Now! Don't be hanging this "ALL" of them on me... That was one of JT's original lines....
I will agree though that ALL is a pretty good idea when it comes to 50s. FA, Custom, BFR, .500 or .510, nothing I can see that needs to be passed over.

Thanks for the input so far. I'll mention again though. I don't want a bfr. FA or Bisley.
Back to the FA.... thoughts on packing with 5?

Jim keeps using the Bisley grip frame on my .50 Alaskan as an excuse not to shoot it! LOL! Sure they look right if they are done right. But, you pay to get it done right. I do have rubber grips for it and while they make it shootable, they are hideous!

Snyd, here is a picture of the very first .500 JRH Model 83 FA. Excuse the photo quality. Great revolver -- shoots exceedingly well!

Thanks for the input so far. I'll mention again though. I don't want a bfr. FA or Bisley. Back to the FA.... thoughts on packing with 5? I been bitten by the 50 bug hard for a couple of years now. I started with a 7 1/2 500SW BFR. Next came a 8 3/8" x-frame. Next came a 7 1/4" Ruger 500Maximum. Next came a 5 1/2" custom FAs 500JRH. Next came a 2 3/4" x-frame. Next came a 6" Custom Bisley in 500Linebaugh Next came a 7 1/2" FAs 50AE that I sent back to FAs for a 500WE cylinder. Next came a 4 3/4" FAs 50AE that was also send back for a 500WE cylinder. My latest is a 6" Reeder stretch frame in 500S&W. If I could only keep one I would choose the 7 1/2" FA's with both cylinders. In-fact if I could only have 2 I would choose the 4 3/4" FA's and the 7 1/2" FA's. It's really nice knowing that FA's will fix anything that might go wrong. Keep your eyes out for deal in a FA's 50AE then send it in for a 500WE Cylinder, and get grips, sites, ect.. for it with brass and reloading dies when you can afford it. The BFR in 500JRH would be a distant second.(I still want one of these!) Customs are great, just not as practical. P.S. DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT CARRYING A FA'S FULLY LOADED YOU WILL HURT YOUR SELF, ITS A 4 SHOT!!!!

But I am a recoil junky, as long as theres no blood... I would probably buy one of those .500 JRH BFRs if I could just SEE one with the 5.5" bbl. I just sold my .500 s&w 10" BFR and the money is burning a hole in my pocket!

If you have a problem you can't solve with 4 rounds of 500WE or 500JRH I'd venture to guess that one more round isn't going to help.. Do I feel more unsafe with my FA 83s than a NM Ruger? Absolutely NOT! Keep things you don't want to shoot away from the muzzle... Get careless and bad things can happen with the NM Ruger or FA 83..

I have a Freedom Arms 500 Wy Express and have been very happy with it. The revolver is extremely accurate and i can shot loads from 850 fps to well beyond my recoil tolerance. I've settled on a 435 LBT WFN at 1150 fps and shot thru a cow elk this fall and found the bullet buried in the dirt behind it. The Freedom Arms are incredibly well made and I have always found the company a pleasure to deal with. That said a custom Ruger can be a real work of art and it comes down to a matter of personal preference. If you plan on using a scope I'd lean towards the Freedom Arms. If you intend to use iron sights its a toss up and i don't think you can go wrong with either.
