Anybody have any experience sealing bone grip blanks? I just received an AWESOME set of elk bone grips from Patrick at Grashorn Gunworks and since these are going on a shooter gun I want them to be waterproof. I did a little final wet sanding with some 800 grit today and noticed that they soak up a bit of water. I want to seal them up so when/if they get wet they wont swell. I use tung oil on my wood grips and it works well, I wonder if it will seal bone as well??? If anyone has any experience in this area I'd appreciate some insight or advice.

The first thing I'd do before I put anything on them is call Grashorn Gunworks & ask how he'd treat his stocks. I'd start with the fellow who makes them. Not trying to be a smart alek, but I'd go to the one who built them frist. He may have some special treatment he does. Frank

They are not sealed with anything from the maker. Expecially the back sides, very porous. Strong but porous. I've got to seal these with something or they wont be seing any holster time. This is a shooter gun for field use and they have to be sealed from water/moisture. Minwax wood hardener seems to be the consensus from my we research tonight. The bone should soak it up as good or better than wood does and then be harder/denser and water resistant to boot. I'm going to try a little on the backsdie of one of teh grip panels this coming weekend and will rpeort back on the results. Wish me luck!

Super Glue..........do a search on Google. This is what all the better knife makers are sealing their bone, horn and wood with.
Easy to do and extremely fast.

I will speak for my comrade Patrick to the extent I can. I think we speak from the same knowledge base.
If I want to fill some pores that appear on the backs, I just use 5 minute epoxy and then surface that with the edge of a razor. Mix a little dust in for good measure, maybe touch the backs to a sanding disc when it’s all dry (if you have a sanding disc).
For exterior surfaces I think a nice wax buff works good.

How about Fiberglass Resin on the backsides? You could even add some cloth to make the grips real strong.
You could even Glass-Bed the Grips to the Grip-Frame.

A knife maker I know told me he seals the end of his elk horn antlers with marine epoxy. He said he can actually watch the base of the antler suck it in.

I'll report my results in a couple of days, Minwax wood hardener... "I'm soaking in it"... It'll be funny to see how many get that Palmoliv 1970's reference. Anyway, they elk bone scales are wet and drying... I'll give 'em a couple of days to dry and see what I get.
Now, let's talk about seal bone... Stelar Sea Lion (extinct apprently for a couple hundred years) is available (and legal) to make blanks with... so PETA can suck that!
