A friend recently approached me and asked if I would be interested in a First Generation SAA. It has the blackpowder frame and is chambered in 45 Colt. The problem is that the gun has been nickle plated. The serial numbers are barely visible. The original one piece grips have also been replaced with the hard rubber type Colt grips. The action works, and the cylinder locks up tight, but the hammer will fall when placed on half cock if it is pushed forward. The chambers and the bore are serviceable, but are far from being pristine.
My question is how much is a Colt in the following condition worth? I know that that is a hard question to answer without seeing the gun, but I am just looking for a ball park figure.
Thanks

Really impossible to even ball park a value. So many variables in saa's that it could be anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand.
Why is the nickle plating a problem? Are you saying it is not original? (maybe that is what you meant when you said the serial numbers are barely visible). The grips can be original too unless it is a US marked gun. The hammer can be re-built to correct the worn half cock notch.
Sorry, not much help I know. Some good pics would help the real Colt experts to maybe give a better answer.

YOU ARE CORRECT--WE CAN'T. BUT I JUST BOUGHT A BP COLT WITH SHOT OUT BARREL AND CYLINDER, POOR GRIPS, LITTLE FINISH BUT GOOD ACTION AND TURNED IT INTO A .44 RUSSIAN WITH A COLT CYLINDER AND BRAND NEW 7-1/2" CHRISTY BARREL WHICH CAME WITH IT.. PAID $500 FOR THE GUN AND BARREL

In my area it would probably be a $600-$900 gun assuming your description is what I imagine. not to long ago I picked up a reblued 1st gen for 700 (38 spl with 2nd gen barrel and cyl) and a reblued Bisley 45 for 700 both nice but reblued, original grips and working well.
