I have both the listed lengths, and seem to find the 5.5 suits me slightly better. Specific use of the day sort of dictates what I might carry at the time.

5 1/2" seems to balance better for me. I like the USFA in 4 5/8".

Of course the only logical answer is "one of each". Carl WRONG!!! What self respecting pistolero has ONE of any gun? My Original Size VAQUEROS/BISLEY VAQUEROS are mostly 5.5 inch, BUT there's a couple of 7.5 inch 44 magnums also. Didn't you watch MATT DILLON and PALADIN on TV when we were kids. I also have a 3.5 inch SHERIFFS MODEL Original Size VAQUERO in 44 that I got a SMOKIN' DEAL on. I watched David Carradine as SHANE at the same time as PALADIN and MATT DILLON.

My 5 singles are all Rugers, here are the barrell lengths
- SBH .44Mag, 7.5" - SBH Reeder custom 510GNR, 5.5" - 2 Old Vaquero 45LC, 4.75" - 1 Single Six .32 H&RMag conversion, cut to 4.75
I prefer short for carry, long for hunting (better accrucacy) and I carry ALOT more than I hunt with a handgun, so I'd say I prefer a 4.75" and voted accordingly.

I prefer the 7 1/2" and carry 5 1/2".

I am in a quandry here. I like the looks of the 4-3/4" better than the 5-1/2". But often I'm seen with a 5-1/2" in my holster. The 5-1/2" is every bit as easy to hide as the 4-3/4" with a good IWB too! I voted for the 5-1/2". but just barley? Frank

I prefer the 4.75 but oddly enough I dont have one in the stable ATM. That will soon be rectified since I have one Bisley .45 on the way. And will subsequently be sent out to get a new octagonal 4.57 barrel and a few other 'things' done. Everything else, single action, is 5.5 in.

Should we just split the difference and say that 5.125" is the perfect length?

Should we just split the difference and say that 5.125" is the perfect length? J.O. Lol. I can't believe this poll is tied at 36 votes a piece.

As a companion side arm I prefer the 4 5/8", but for hunting a 7 1/2". I guess for me the 5 1/2" just doesn't fit for either. Don

Should we just split the difference and say that 5.125" is the perfect length? J.O. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D I'm surprised too, I'd have thought the 4-3/4" would have won handily! Frank

OK. I have played with revolver since college (48 years). I'm sure not an authority, but I am from "out of town". I like 5.5 in the double actions such as the N frame Smiths and the Colt New Service. I have 4 5/8, 5 1/2, 7 1/2, and 12 inch in the single actions. I have come to settle on the 4 5/8. I don't see a difference in group size if the guns are tuned well. That includes front loader Dragoons and 1851's. Just me, I guess. But, heck, everybody should have what they like.

I like the looks of the EXTREME on both the short and long barrels-- my 1957 RSS with add ons done in the late 1950's adjustable sights, premier round gate, and a ACE steel trigger shoe---- plus a 12.5 rebarrel--all old school plus homemade stag grips.
