???I went for a midday still hunt with my Ruger Super Blackhawk today. As I entered some thick cover I bumped a couple of deer so I pull the gun from the holster with maybe a shot possible. I hear the gun rattle a bit and look to find the base pin is out! When I push the base pin in the base pin latch falls out. I find the latch screw and spring but the nut is lost! I unload the gun and drop my head in disbelief. I have had the latch nut loosen after extended shooting sessions and always give all the screws on the gun a once over before hunting season. Either I overlooked it or the nut loosened coming in and out of the holster. So check your base pin latches!

If this is a problem with a particular gun, I think a judicious application of Loc-Tite would be my next move. That should truly solve the problem.

I've never needed Loctite ... at least not yet. But I do have a custom made screwdriver that fits the nut side and I use it in conjunction with a second screwdriver on the other side and make sure the latch is screwed together tight. So far I've never had one unscrew itself.

Just got off the phone with Ruger and they are mailing a replacement part free of charge. Good deal.

I had that happen to me once with a Ruger Super Blackhawk, a 3 screw. I lost the base pin latch in the brush. I rummaged through my P/U & came up with a roll of black electricians tape. I taped the base pin with several wraps around the bbl & it got me home. Not ideal, but it worked for me for the rest of the day. Frank
