Kinda like a friend of mine who sent back a 71/2 45 Vaquero to Ruger. His letter was along the lines...pistol shoots coffee can groups 5 inches left at 25 yards. If you can fix it I would like to have a 4 5/8 barrell too. If you cant just send it back,my wife gave it to me for our anniversary,I will just make it into a very expensive paperweight. He got it back with a 4 5/8 barrell that shoots 1 hole groups and they even sent the 7 1/2 barrell back with it.

I bought some of those nasty Remington swaged bullets and shoot mine. It eats 'em up! 250gr LRN-FP Remington Swagged .454 diameter 6.5 gr W231 WLP mixed brass OAL: 1.672 668 fps avg. S&W 25-5 w/8 3/8 inch barrel-LARGE THROAT Gun. 4 inch groups @ 50 yds I already have a paperweight.....but I like yours! Bob

It seems to me that I remember having one of these and found that it would not shoot 5 inch groups at 50 yards yours is one of the better ones. I sent it back to Smith and they returned it with a letter stating that it was within their tolerances. It also had a .458 barrel.
Needless to say this was the final straw and my relationship with any Smith. As far as I am concerned they are all paperweights.

S&W replaced my cylinder for $150 and paid return shipping. I did shoot some "proper" diameter bullets I had Beartooth cast for me but decided to replace the cylinder so I could use the same diameter bullets in my multiple 45's. It shoots great now.

S&W has treated me very well. $150 shipped is a great deal.

Over-sized throats are hit or miss. I have a 45 Colt Virginian Dragoon that mics 0.456 - 0.457". I shoot 0.452's and it's pretty accurate. Usually holds 2" @ 25 yards off the bench with 255 - 270 grain hardcasts. I've seen other 45 Colts with over-sized throats that pattern like a shotgun. That said, I like your photo. -Lee www.singleactions.com
