I was fortunate enough to get a Montana cow elk tag this year and am hoping to fill it with a handgun. Been working on loads for my Freedom Arms 500 Wyoming and settled on 14.5 of Hodgdon's Longshot with an LBT 445 WFN-GC lubed with LBT Blue. 10 shots averaged 1141 fps with a standard deviation of 9. Group is 10 shots at 25 yards with a 7.5" barrel and a 4x Leupold. 25 grains of H 4227 averaged 1154 with the same SD of 9 but it didn't seem quite as accurate. Case for comparison is a 45 ACP.

Not bad... Should do for a cow elk! I knew I needed a longer barreled 500WE FA with a scope! That is a lot of bullet weight in your 500WE.. Watch getting to close to the end of the cylinder. My 4 inch 500WE gave me bullet jumping cylinder locking fits with some 440 grain WFNs..

I have a little room to spare, its not a real hot load and I crimp them pretty well. I have a LBT 400 WFN-GC for my 475 and thats pretty tight. Its a 6" with open sights and I settled on 15 grains of HS-6 which gives me around 1050 and so far no problems.

Nice work. I haven't tried a 500 WE or 500 JRH yet, but I hope to down the road. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Your load will certainly kill any cow elk that ever lived. Good hunting to you! I've used various bullets in the WE, but for hunting use, have settled on the 350 XTP, Fed 210's and 31 gr. of H-110 for 1350 fps from a 6" barrel. It shoots a bit flatter than the 400 + weights, and one of my WE's is an AE / WE convertible in which I matched my loads for each cylinder and caliber to hit the same POI without changing the sights. I'm a big fan of simplicity. The FA WE's are great guns. As you can see below, I like 'em. Stan, the difference in velocity is only about 25 fps per inch of barrel, so 6" is plenty, in my opinion. They've been known to kill stuff, too: By coincidence, my next hunt is for Wyoming pronghorn in about 3 weeks, but I also have a cow elk hunt planned for later in the year, and will probably use a WE. Once again, good luck on your hunt! (Forget that rifle!)

Scope my 6 inch octagon FA? Noooooo.... I just can't do that. I'll just trade for one more... Looks like a 7 1/2 in the longest standard length I can hope to find.. Maybe a 50AE and have a 500WE cylinder made...

gjn,
I run a 400gr LFN at 1,100 + from a .475 LB FA 83 -- can't imagine the 440 gr .500 at that velocity having any problem with anything in th L48 plus, it's easily controllable. Good luck on your cow elk hunt.
Ken,
I love the 4 3/4" w/ivory micartas and the 6" octagon 500s. As lazy as I'm getting in my old age, I would reload for the 500 WE for those two.
Anyone else notice the contrast -- Bison, cold weather gear -- Hog, short sleeve T-shirt -- doesn't get much more extreme than that.
