I'm looking to buy a loading gate spring for a Ruger blackhawk. Midway has them for $30 from power custom. I'd really like to find one that is stiffer like the one in a BFR.
Anybody got one or know a place to get one besides Midway?
My 5.5" SS Bisley .45 colt kicks the gate open sometimes from recoil when shooting +P loads and has always been easier to open that I think it should be when compared to other Rugers.

$30.00 for a spring that sells for $5.00- $8.00 from Midway! My newest Ruger, a 45 Flat Top has the stiffest loading gate of any Ruger Single Action I own. I definitely have to put some force on it to get it open. Maybe your spring just has weakened some. I will be looking to lower the pressure on mine when I take it apart. I would try a Ruger spring and buy ammo with the extra cash.

I called Ruger an explained the situation. They are sending me a free one. Can't beat that!

I would seriously consider ordering the stiffer one from Magnum Research (now owned by Kahr). Odds are 98% it will fit.

Might also try "opening" the one that is in there.

I think you will be happy with the new Ruger spring. I just bought a New Vaquero and the loading gate spring is significantly stronger than any of the springs in my other Rugers. I'm wondering if they have recently changed the specs on these springs to avoid problems like you and others have mentioned.

I had some issues with the spring as it came in my new Lipsey's FT 45 so did a little reshaping and it has been working just fine. Seems to me I slightly changed the angle on the tip that bears on the loading gate.
