What are the best grips for a Magnum Research BFR for shooting comfort?

I know what I'm asking is sort-of like what shoes fit best, but in general, are most people happy with these ugly rubber things that come on them? I have seen the wood hogues - they look interesting. I'm sure Herrett's can make me something.
Any input at all?

If it is a JT BFR, you will have to send your grip frame off to be fitted for grips to someone like Pvt. Schultz, CLC, and the like. Or you can send it back to the factory for fitting. The grip frame is very close to a SBH, but just enough different that the grips won't quite fit correctly.

Is this beyond the abilities of someone that is handy with files and sandpaper?
No moving of the locating pin or anything, right?

My 450 Marlin BFR came with the big Hogue grips. Didn't have to shoot it much to take them off and put the rubber ones on. The Hogues just seemed to open my palm wide and invite the recoil of the 450 to come and get it... The rubber is ugly but much more comfortable for me. My next BFR grips will come from Gary Reeder. I recently sent him a FA and a Bowen Nimrod. He insisted that I ship him the entire gun. When they returned I understood why the grips on my Reeder guns fit like they do. Check his prices and turn around time.

I can't say if they'll be the best, but I have an old set of Herrett's super blackhawk grips that I'm thinning down and fitting to my BFR, will eventually stain them dark and finish with truoil. They have some slop and will require bedding to the waxed gripframe with JB weld for a solid feel. I have a similar thinned down set on an old 3-screw super blackhawk and like them alot. I got the idea from Jeff Quinn's Super Blackhawk article where he mentions a set he thinned down to fit his hand better.

Some love 'em, some hate 'em. Personally, I like the stock Uncle Mike's. In general I'm not a fan of rubber, but functionally those fit my hand well. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Factory SBH grips laid on a BFR. Poorly and quickly made grips that are fitted as good as possible when you are doing it with a dremel tool. The pictures don't show it well, but the grips are quite thin and allow me to get a better grip on the revolver than I can with the fat grips. This one is about to be sent off for grips as well. I just couldn't bring myself to shoot it even once with the Goodyears.

I agree with Lee and Axehandle. The stockers may be butt ugly but they're just right for my hands.

I have the factory Micartas for show, and the rubber grips for go. With stiff loads in my .500 JRH (425s at 1,450 fps), the Micartas allow it to move around too much for my taste, but the problem is solved with the rubber grips. The rubber is ugly, though......
Problem solved with a Bisley grip frame........ ;D

I agree....rubber cushions the recoil, but nothing controls it like a Bisley. I just wish Magnum Research used the old DMAX frame with the fit and finish of the new JT BFRs. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Anybody try the RUBBER hogue grips for a SBH on a BFR? They *look* comfy and sort-of bisley shaped - and are about $20.

put the factory micarta on my .500 but finally had to "slim & modify" the Hogue wood on .45-70. removed palm swells from both sides and cut the finger grooves off front strap. left after refinish was a handsome long grip similar in shape to but slightly larger than the Ruger Bisley. works for me but a true bisley style frame would be even better

I just bought a 44 bfr and was planning to get the micartas but they are no longer available.
Alternatives?
Would anyone consider selling their micartas that aren't using theirs anymore?
