I had a craving today to obtain a 454 Ruger Alaskan. I searched the local dealers and the internet. There seems to be a lot of 44 Magnum Alaskans, but a real shortage of 454's. Does anyone have an idea why this would be? I decided the Alaskan would fill my desire for a short barrel double action 45 Colt.

They are not common. Getting a new one takes searching, and perhaps patience. With even more patience, a nice pre-owned one may show up at a local dealer, which is how I just got mine. I had to do a layaway, but just paid it out this week.

There was a movie last year titled Faster, that starred Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in which his character carried a Ruger Alaskan. More details are available at www.imfdb.org/wiki/Faster. Who knows, there might have been a Dirty Harry effect and the few Alaskans on the market may have been bought by fans of The Rock? Hopefully, they'll be shot little and will turn up in the used gun cases in the near future.
