I posted a rather windy diatribe about the Colt New Service on another forum, and got quite a response. Seems the old Colt is mighty popular with fans today. I'm sort of partial to the old Colt, as it was my first real gun as a kid, bought mail-order for $29.95, after adding $5.00 more for select grade. Mine was an ex-Canadian Mounties revolver in .455 Eley, rechambered to .45 Colt. This was the basis for my first "custom" revolver, a target sighted .44 Special. The New Service served the U.S. Army twice, as the .45 Colt M1909 and then the .45 ACP M1917. The M1909 was a .45 Colt, but the M1909 cartridge had a larger diameter rim than commercial ammunition, and was produced only by Frankford Arsenal. It can be loaded in SAA revolvers, but only by skipping chambers, as two rounds cannot be loaded next to each other in the smaller SAA cylinder: The New Service also served the Canadian Mounties and Army during WW II, and in .38 Special, the U.S. Border Patrol. It served many state troopers in various calibers in its day. Not a bad service record, by any means. Bob Wright

Life is too short to use plastic guns.

Have owned several NS revolvers and love them. Currently I have only 2 but they are fun to carry and shoot. Freaks out the "plastic fantastic" crowd.

Jack had a NS in 357 at CSA... Any other caliber I would have taken it home... still tempting to send it to get re-chambered...

I have a .455 that has been given the full target treatment along with a spare .45 Colt cylinder.
Nice firearm.

Looked at Jack's New Service again. I missed something important- it has a King's action trigger and hammer...

How did I miss that? Too much shooting - or working with kiddo while he was shooting - and not enough visiting. Shoot, so to speak.
