I have no doubt you did what you said. However, there is no way you could get 1,462 fps with a 340gr bullet in a FA97 with acceptable pressures. Call Freedom Arms and tell them what you did and your results and see what they have to say.Paul I got home last night and checked my records for the M97 - It was the 325 grain beartooth that I took up to 1,486fps with N110 powder - not their 340 grain. Called John today at FA and we discussed the load and he thought I would probably be around the 35K psi range, which he advised was over what FA recommends for the M97. He stated the Model 97 was made to operate at or under 30K psi and recommended not going over 1,250fps with a 325 grain hardcast. Doghawg had it right with the min specs and polished chambers not showing pressure signs like most other revolvers. John stated there were few pressure signs from the cartridge cases when they blew up Model 83's & 97's because of the tight tolerances and high poished charge holes.

joej,
Thanks for the update. Very informative post for those that hand load for the F97 in .45 Colt or others contemplating buying one. Freedom Arms customer service is second to none.

Bringing this thread back to life.
I have been contemplating getting a 97 in 45 Colt. But, I would most likely want to shoot 255 gr bullets at around 850 fps. I would also want to shoot 270SAA buckets at 1000fps. The later would be the "hottest" that I would probably want to shoot. I currently shoot it in my other 45's, including a USFA and S&W 25-5.
The posts in this thread suggest that the 97 won't be particularly accurate with these loads-preferring much hotter loads.
Is that still the opinion of those of you who own one?
Thank you!

My FA97 45 Colt shoots 1.25-1.5" at 25 yards with mild loads.
The FA97 gets my vote for the finest production revolver out there. I only own three. But, if I was a rich man, I'd own one in every centerfire caliber built.

What calibers do you have now? I'm thinking a 97 will be my next big purchase. But who knows...

How do you like the long barrel on the small frame?
I'm looking for a 357, but 44's and 45's seem to be a lot more common.

I see more 357s than all others. 44 Special is the most illusive.
I love the long barrel. Gun wears a Weaver 2x scope on a SSK base.

Buy it. Shoots all reasonable 45 volt loads better than most can hold. I have seen one inch groups with 45 acp so no worries

I don't have a 97 but my 83 will shoot light ACP loads just as well as full tilt 454s. Both models run a 1 in 24 barrel so I think your intended load should be just fine in a 97. These were 155 gr SWCs over a minimum charge of Red Dot for example:
