I was able to shoot my new to me, Hauppage, NY Seville this weekend. To say I was underwhelmed would be a huge understatement. I had 2 failures to fire, the basepin popped out every other shot, the loading gate seemed a little loose and the front sight seems to be too low.
When I dropped the hammer on a live round and got a click, my excitement drained away and I felt miserable. "This gun needs gunsmithing," I thought. "There goes my bargain .44." After trying some fixes at the range, I packed up my gun and ammo and my friend and I left.
Fast forward to today though. I stopped at the store and bought a can of brake cleaner, and prepared my revovler for a good spraying. I removed the grips and loosened the gripframe screws, so more of the internal parts would be exposed. I then took the brake cleaner and sprayed every surface until it ran clear. I think the seller sprayed the gun down with a lot of WD-40 and then allowed it to dry in place on the surfaces. The gun did seem like it had lube or grease on most of the surfaces. The brake cleaner took all of it off, and when I put the grips back on, and tightened the gripframe screws, I took it out to try again.
I went through most of the box of ammo without a problem. Every round fired and as a great bonus, the basepin stayed put for every shot. It doesn't need a gunsmith after all. It still seems to be shooting high, but I can live with that. This gun is a high quality nice gun after all. One feature that I appreciate is that the grips have a slight palm swell which provides a nice handful of walnut to grab onto. My grip feels solid, and repeatable from shot to shot. You guys recommended a good one. Thanks.
