Does anyone have any first hand experience as a patient, parent, or doctor? My 11 year old son's best friend got bit earlier this year. He has missed most little league games and lots of school. He is always tired and has violent mood swings. His name is Tiago and he's an awesome kid. Prayers would be appreciated, as well as any information. Thank you.

While not as direct as a parent, patient or doctor,, I can say one of my DIL's was diagnosed with it about 7-8 years ago. She had a rough time for quite a while until properly diagnosed. She had to go to Duke University to get it properly diagnosed. The local doc's failed to do so. She did experience a lot of tiredness, and had to take a lot of medication daily. Plus,, it took quite a while to get her back into a more "normal" way of life. Then,, her first round of breast cancer was discovered. She's had (2) rounds of that since. We've all felt her breast cancer issues were compounded by her weakened system due to Lyme disease.
Prayers for Tiago will be in my prayers.

Sorry to hear about Tiago, prayers for him from me also. When I lived in Tulsa one of my friends got sick and the doctors didn't know what was wrong with him. Finally one of them asked if he had been bitten by a tick lately. Yes was the answer and the diagnosis was completed Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

Hope he gets past it. I have an old friend who has it and I don’t suspect he’ll ever be the same again. Fatigue and pain….. I’ll send one up…

Get to a doctor that treats Lyme disease
Was visiting a friend from suburban Virginia at his place in PA. His dog had Lymes and was going fast. Girl friend was a Vet and looked at the dog. “Hate to step on another Vets toes but he doesn’t have much Lymes in your manicured lawn world. She took over and the dog was fine in a week. She saw a lot of Lymes in rural PA.

My great nephew that lived in Va, his Dad a vet, and they had night "night hounds" and bird dogs got it around age 9. So a very fast correct diagnosis. Large amounts of proper anti-biotics and he recovered well. He is a man now, got his jump wings a couple of years ago, and not allowed to tell ole uncle everything he does now. I wish the boy the best of luck, sharp Docs, etc..

It kicked my ass real good in 2006 (I was 50 years old, diagnosed early) and took several rounds of Doxycycline to get beat it. I was benching 220 regular and could still hang with my teenage boys on wind sprints. I had a bunch of joint problems shortly thereafter.
I was lucky. A couple of acquaintances, about my age, ended up in the hospital for weeks. The stuff is not to be trifled with and getting competent medical care is critical.

Remember be kind to opossums. They eat ticks, lots of them. They also don't get rabies. The clean up the woods. Yet folks kill them just to kill them.

Permethrin! I buy it by the quart ,which makes tens of gallons! I have it in a pump sprayer that I use on all my outdoor clothing and foot wear. Here on Long Island we have all the tick species along with the disease that they carry! Docs here immediately put you on a long treatment of doxycycline if you tell them u were bit. They don’t even test u for the disease! Hopefully the little guy will bounce back without any lasting problems!! Praying for him!

Don't live too far from Lyme CT. It's so common here they tend to give you 30 days of Doxy if you get a tick bite. You can pay about $750 for a "tick panel" or lyme panel (few insurance Co will cover) and not only will results help treatment, it will pick up lyme that the std cheaper tests miss. We've been dealing with it since the 80s here. My cousin moved south had symptoms and was told they don't have it in their area. Simple test missed it six months of arguing with the hospital later it turned out she maybe brought it with her? Late treatment saw her in a wheel chair.
Like any serious illness individual reactions vary as well as recovery. Sounds like he's young which bodes well for recovery at least. He may need heavy doxycycline or even more powerful antibiotics for six months or more. When advanced it damages nerve tissue and causes serious joint inflammation and can get much worse from there.
The worst results I've seen are when they Don't treat someone long enough and it isn't completely eradicated.
With correct, aggressive treatment he should be able to fully recover. There isn't much that bothers me like ticks these days.
It doesn't matter where you are, or what kind of tick it is either. I removed a brown dog tick from my wife 15 years ago, we paid to test it, and it was positive. She got treated prior to any symptoms and was fine. I've paid to have ticks off the dogs (Pugs and French Bulldogs) that were positive, all from out manicured, densely settled, suburban lawn, these are couch dogs, not outside dogs. They all came up positive.

I have it. Very nearly killed me despite being in my late 20s when it hit but nobody knew what it was then in my part of the country. I have all manner of joint problems related to it and I feel like it just generally ruined my health. I was one of those folks that never got sick, bounced back quickly from injuries, etc. In the course of a year that all changed, far faster than can be attributed to aging.
