I'm watching this interview with Phil. I've read a few articles about him over the years and always have this vision of his 458 that he carries that has obviously been rode hard and put away wet. In this video he talks about the bear he killed with the 9 mm and the story that goes along with it. It's really cool to listen to guys like this because after 45 years of guiding we could all likely learn a lot from him. youtu.be/UANI6U-SL4o?si=Fqs3XDPChgRuAibu

Pretty neat stuff. Phil's cool under pressure, earned, built up over the years to a level few can attain. No fault of his, but there is a down side I'm seeing. The 9mm's being pushed as legit bears guns now by folks looking for more "clicks" on their youtube channels. If it comes to pass, that this gets some to pack afield who otherwise wouldn't ,, I'd gladly retract my concern.

I personally would not argue with a man who lives in the area and has 45 years experience guiding like that. I can't argue with his logic. But you will never see me carrying a 9 mm for bear protection. I respect what he's done. You just won't see me doing it. That said, I think it would be fantastic to spend a week in the bush with them hunting or fishing.

I’ve read over and over about the “9mm bear kill” but this is the first time actually seeing Phil telling the story. I was glad to see it told from the source. Not having any experience in this area, I wonder how that 9 would’ve performed in the case of a head on charge. Would those hard cast .355 bullets penetrated a bear’s skull?
I was also quite surprised to hear they all normally carry .357 revolver’s. On my one and only bear hunt in Maine our guide carried a Colt Trooper .357 but that was black bears. I believe if my only choice was either a 9mm or a .357Mag, I would go with the revolver.
Thanks for posting this. Again I appreciated getting to see Phil telling the story how this event unfolded.

I've said the same thing about a head on charge, I think the outcome might have been much worse. But Phil, too his credit did what he had to do with that 9mm & he stayed in the fight like the experienced guide that he is. I set around the campfire with Phil last year as well & he's really kind of quiet & reserved, he's not a bragger. He just did what he had to to to save those 2 clients plus himself & I'm pretty sure if he had to do it over again he would opt for a bigger gun but he kept his head & lived to talk about it.

Never saw him before. I remember John Linebaugh talking about the penetration tests at some of the shoots. He said it was hard to explain but that big slow moving bullets out penetrated many hot rounds like a 454. He shared examples. I wonder if the concept that applied there is why the 9mm works better than anticipated.
