I finally got around to shooting my FA 83 in 454 with a magna ported 10 inch barrel.
The muzzle rise is not bad at all, but the gun recoils more straight back than in an arc like I'm used to. In that respect it seems like a good candidate for a scope.
My FA 83 in 44 mag rolls in the hand with no porting- characteristics similar to my big bore Bisley's, which is to say relatively easy on the hands but with significant muzzle rise.
I'll need padded gloves to keep shooting this FA 454, but for anatomic longevity I might be better off trimming the barrel shorter and living with traditional recoil characteristics. That or trade it away.
Is this a characteristic of porting or just specific to me and this gun?

By now you know a proper Ronnie Wells grip frame does more to tame recoil. Enough people like Mag-na-Porting to have sent Larry Kelly handgun hunting around the world. The late writer Hunter S. Thompson gave my late friend William S. Burroughs a Model 83 .454 Casull with 7-1/2” barrel and, as I recall Mag-na-Ported. Thin as a reed Burroughs found the .454 stimulation----one cylinder worth, Then it was back to standard .45 Colt. I had a couple of Mag-na-Ported M-29’s. Larry Kelly shortened the barrel of one to 5-inches, and Bo-Mar made a 5” PPC sight for it. Weight of the Bo-Mar rib made the ports redundant. David Bradshaw

I had my 4" Redhawk that I put a 454 cylinder in MagnaPorted. That gun really had some flip and torque to it. Magnaport tamed it. Yup, redirected the recoil but Uncle Mike Grips make it work for me. Also had my Kimber Montana 325wsm Magnaported. Light gun with a pencil barrel. That gun had tremedous muzzle flip and wanted to twist right off your shoulder. Magnaport did the trick.
My 7.5 FA 454 is not ported, sports a 4X Leupold and will stay that way.

I can shoot several cylinder full of big bore in a non-ported revolver. 2 cylinders in my buddy's ported 460 (shooting 454) is terrible. The palm of my hand and my elbow hurt for 2 days afterwards.

The only .454 I have shot is my scoped 7 1/2” FA 83 that already had the 4 port Magnaporting when I bought it. I don’t know if it is the combination of weight and porting but the recoil ain’t bad.

The only guns I ever had that were ported were a TC Encore in .260 Rem and a titanium Taurus in .41 mag. The Taurus was a handful with its 4” barrel and ultra light weight, but since I never had the opportunity to shoot the same gun non-ported, I can’t say what effect the ports had. The Encore did recoil straight back into my hand but due to its weight it still wasn’t bad. It was a superb deer getter !

I had a FA 83 with 7-1/2” and ports. I sold it and bought a 10” non-ported barrel. I’m much happier now.

Never had a ported pistol or revolver. We didn’t do such things. Lol. I had only been around ported rifles and they were LOUD. Maybe they are better now.
But I am having an H&K USP Elite done in 460 Rowland it seems. And they use a compensator.
This info helps.

Have several Mag-Na-Ported guns and can tell the difference shooting them vs. a non-ported gun.
Two are S&W Model 58s. Have shot both at IDPA shoots and shoot two stages with one and two with the other. Muzzle rise with the non-ported gun is noticeably more than the ported gun but don't feel any recoil difference at all.
In SA guns, the first 83 was a 6" .454 non-ported. 260s/1650 were unpleasant to say the least and started to damage my wrists and elbows. Found the identical gun in .41 Magnum that also happened to be ported and it is a pussycat to shoot even with 300s. Now the .41 is not real close in power to the .454 but the porting doesn't seem to generate any more recoil to my hand than the same gun with a 4.75" barrel that is non-ported...
As to the Ruger Bisley grip, for me, love the looks, hate shooting them. Have had three over the years and the rear center of the gripstrap doesn't roll but slams right into the center of my hand....this starts to irritate the wrist and elbow. Yet the Reeder "Gunfighter" modified Bisly grip I can shoot all day..
Had a 6" FA .475 and have a 4.25" .500 WE/JRH. The .475 was ported. Both shot 400+- grain bullets at 1050+- fps...neither are pleasant to shoot... For SAs pleasant for me stops at 300 grains...230 for DA...

PUT ME IN THE PRO MNP GROUP, I HAVE 5 FA MODEL 83 454's ALL ARE MNP'ed, I ALSO LIKE IT IN REDHAWKS, N FRAMES, ENCORE BARRELS, CONTENDER BARRELS, AND BLACKHAWKS. ONLY PLATFORM I DO NOT LIKE IT ON IS MY 7.5" 45 COLT RUGER BISLEY, SEEMS TO HAVE CHANGED THE RECOIL (FOR ME) SO THAT IT IS A NUCKLE BUSTER.

I don’t much like the looks of MNP or Brakes on revolvers, but it’s a necessity with some big boomers that I hunt with. As I shoot mostly one handed, 454 on up gets obnoxious. On my long barreled scoped hunting revolvers I have full radial brakes, that work exceptionally well. Turns a two handed monster into a one handed pussycat. On MNP ‘ing the 5 port is noticeably better than 2 or 4. Add in a RW 4degree frame ( I prefer the bearskinner Bisley) and you will definitely extend your shooting sessions.

I just don't like how loud they are, if hunting without ear plugs in... The absolute worst was my 309JDJ in a Contender. I was hunting one day and a skunk waddled into view about 75 yds away... Hadn't seen a deer all day, so I blew it up and my ears hurt for 3 weeks.

I have a Winchester mod 70 7MM mag. that is ported, it's so loud to shooters nearby I ask the range guys to keep me away from other shooters.
