Howdy Gents,
Trying to find a S&W Mtn Gun in .45 Colt has proven fruitless after years of searching. So I’m wondering why not just buy a current Model 25 with a 6.5” bbl and have a qualified smith cut it down to 4”?
I have heard of some chamber dimension issues in the past and a few other things. Fill me in on if it is a bad idea to buy this gun. It’s mission would be woods carry in steep mtns with grizz, loaded with hard cast boolits of an acceptable intensity. I guess I could buy a Ruger Redhawk .45Colt/ACP but I am looking for an excuse to carry a Smith .45 Colt like the wise elders of yore.

Sir, The only reason i can think of to not buy a 25 Smithie is if you are dead Broke. The only other reason would be if you were just plain ole dead. Hahaha. Both acp and colt in the smith and wesson are a pleasure to shoot. I know a gentleman that is getting lets say not so attached to his as he grows older. it is a 1960 0r 61 model in 45 colt. I will ask him again and see what he says. My 25-5 45 colt was a piece of my grandfathers collection that i hold dear, and my 25-2 45 acp i bought from the gentleman i am referring to 30 years ago. it is a 1955 model. R

I’ve had this very idea, maybe going to something a little different like 4 1/2 or 5”, as a Plus the new ones have a square butt.

I had a 25-5, 4 inch. The unfortunate, operative word here is "had." I've been looking to replace it for 30+ years and should have when they were less than $1,000.00. I would recommend one.
I saw a 4 inch Mod. 25 Mountain Gun on Guns International within the last couple weeks.

And yes sir I am very interested if your friend is open to it. And thanks for the response btw, I just left you a voicemail regarding Bisley grips for NM Blackhawks an hr or two ago. Ha. Cherishing firearms like you do your grandpa’s and turning them into heirlooms is what I am trying to do for my son, so only classy purchases if I can help it. Cheers!

If you don't mind a round butt and a key lock these are out there. I see them go cheaper than the stainless models. Happy Shooting. Boats

Round buts are a pair of conversion grips from being square but if that's what is desired.

I wonder which S&W has the highest after the dash number? 13's up there. I have a 25-15 that I recently purchased. Sorry, it's a little dirty, serious lack of discipline on my part, however, I have been having fun with it. I've been deep seating 200 gr LSWCs because I don't have any other bullets molded right now and I've become fascinated with the topic of deep seating.
