If this has been covered here before and there is a link to the thread please post it.
But my question is, What accurate or current info is available about the rifle? I know it wasn't a 45-70. I'm guessing a custom 1873 left in the white but built for the movie.
It's one of my favorite gun movies of the western flavor.

I love the movie, watched a bunch of times when on the western channel. The scene in the bar where he butt strokes the shot glass into the guys face. Talk about Attitude Adjustment !!!

I like the movie but do not care to watch it too much. It reminds me of the societal issues we face today, where a strong person or military is relied upon to do what needs to be done and get a society through a crisis and then when the issue becomes less critical and society feels they should step up and actually act they impair or restrain the faction that got them to the point of being less critical and more handleable. Effectively claiming that “compassion” is now called for instead of the action that resolved the issue. It reminds me of VietNam and Desert Storm, and other military actions. Politicians can be substituted for “society” but the outcome is the same. Embarrassed by their “big dog” or “big stick” and the action and reaction that helped resolve the crisis it is placed in a discrete place so as not to create more embarrassment.
Good movie, I just cannot stand the ending.
my vote is for a firing upon action closing device on the trigger doo dad. Trapr

Personally, I didn't see any political relevance. I viewed Russell as a man with integrity deciding to do the right thing and he ended up paying the ultimate sacrifice for it.
