Have pushed a 265 Beartooth wfn to something like 1060 fps with a starting load. Have played with other loads and got a 250 xtp over 1200, but it escapes me at the moment where that landed. I do remember it was with accurate no. 7. I am about to have a parts gun built with that cylinder and a 454 bisley barrel. Be interesting to see what the slow twist and taylor throat does for the cartridge. These things live on the faster burning powders. Sounds like a good hunting load! This was in a large frame Blackhawk? Super blackhawk hunter with a 7 1/2 inch barrel

Am 110% confident that given proper powder selection that a nominal 250g @ a nominal 1100fps is reasonable and safe. Years ago I saw a particular recipe published by some gun scribe involving the #454424 & 2400 in AutoRim cases and fired thru the m25 S&W. Later I tested variations of this load(bullets varied for nose style mostly) As always recorded velocity varies from gun to gun etc. But I routinely achieved +/- 1100fps in either starlines Super cases or R-P autorim cases. Guns varied from late 50s area model 55 target, m625s from 80s & 90s, a couple of Blackhawk convertibles, a converted to 45 Super para ordinance LDA, my custom 1911 pin gun retuned for hotter ammo and a FA m83. No need for magnum primers, never exceed 14.5g 2400 and you’ll get +/-1100 from 4-6inch revolvers and Super set up autos with 5”tube Wish I could recall name of the gun scribe, he was fairly prolific contributor in 80/90s

My Ruger Blackhawk in 45 Colt has the 45acp cylinder. Mine is about a 1972 made model and the revolver with a 4 5/8 barrel empty weight about 38 ounces. It's quite unpleasant to shoot +P loads from mainly the back of the trigger guard hitting my knuckle. With hot loaded 45acp it's only a little less pleasant. I have a semi auto Thompson with 16 inch barrel and I've pushed it some and even with the 16 inch barrel didn't get anything worth it. Same thing with my semi auto HK UMP (yes it's semi auto UMP with the UMP upper receiver, folding stock, and 25 round magazines) with 16 inch barrel. Didn't get real high velocities. Being the only thing metal on the UMP is the barrel and bolt (even the hammer is plastic with a sheet metal face) the sucker is light and really had a punch to it. I believe my my Blackhawlk the 45 acp if much more efficient per grain of powder compared to the 45 Colt.

I've loaded hundreds of short cowboy specials (which are basically a rimmed 45acp) and developed loads with bullet weights from 235gr through 250's of different styles which all easily reach 975-1000 through 5.5" barrels. Pressures with enforcer & Unique stay in the 23,000psi range using the right bullet too. In 7.5" barrels, those same loads go 1050-1075fps.
Pretty damn close to 1100fps right there, basically at standard acp pressure. I'd imagine through strong cylinder guns and modest pressure increase a guy could pretty easily go 1100+ if he really wanted.

The old Speer #8 shows ?? grains of 2400 giving 1155 fps with a 240 cast swc from a 6.5" 25-2 as maximum from the 45 AR round.
PM me for the grains, I'm not posting it.

Sounds like the ACP can be a pretty peppy little booger in the right gun. I have a flat top convertible that ive never fired and thought about parting with. I may just find some small primer 45acp brass and sit on it for that worst case scenario.

Kinda getting away from the original topic, but...
My used FA97 45 Colt/45 ACP is the last revolver I'd give up.
The 45 Colt Cylinder lives in a storage box and the 45 ACP Cylinder stays in the gun.
That Cylinder has been cut for Starline 45 Auto Rim Brass. As much as I love cast bullets, my favorite load is 7.5 grn Power Pistol pushing a Berry's 230 grn HP at 1050 fps.
These bullets mushroom like no other if not pushed too hard. In the area I live, it's all I'll ever need.
That being said, my FA97 44 Special and 45 Colt are just as good. All three are 5.5" guns.
No other gun built compares to the quality, packability and power these guns possess...JMHO

This thread is very interesting to me.
I have a Custom BFR being made right now in 45 Colt, when I ordered at the last minute I went ahead and ordered an extra cylinder in 45 ACP, I mostly did it since I have thousands of 45ACP on hand but currently no 45ACP pistols. NOW I am seeing this may be another road to go down! lol

As much as I dearly love my singles actions my go to gun is was a limited run of Colt's Combat Commander Gold Cup stainless in 45acp. They made a 1000 blued and a 1000 stainless. The gun is fully tuned, will feed empty cases and I had Jimmy Clark weld up the barrel when it was alive and I fitted it. It's utterly reliable.

Having started handgun hunting with a 45acp Commander many years ago, I hold in high regard a 230gr. bullet at 800fps inside 50 yards. I have an old SW 1917 that I carry using one of Sixshots 270gr. Penta HPs and it gets 830fps from its short 3” barrel. The load came from 45AR data I found on LoadData.com, I would have no issues hitting a pig or deer with that bullet inside 50 yards.

Me, I'd be real happy with a 45 Colt equivalent load. I wouldn't need much more but would have a use for all the SP primers I have. Great idea.

Barrels even had the left hand twist like the Colts did. They are gone now. That barrel and a new set of grips I was in business. Totally different revolver then I was use to. It's BIG and I like it. Very pleasant to shoot.

I have the 454’s and could down load them or cut brass down for the colt in a worst case scenario, but another option never hurts. Interesting thread and by all means continue to pursue it. However being flush with small pistol primers and a 454, a powder such as HS6 will do what you want and more without stressing a 45ACP.
