I've been toying with the idea of getting a BFR in 444 Marlin. For months I've watched GB and there might be ONE listed somewhere. Today I looked on GB and find tons of these available. Looks like BFR is shipping these again.
A buddy decided he liked my BFR 500JRH so he bought a BFR in 460 Smith. My turn... 'twas thinking the 444 Marlin for something different. I already have ammo. Of course the BFR is 45-70 might be fun too.
Maybe I'll hunt with this. Maybe. Probably mostly be used on gallon water jugs, 2 liter bottles and large fruit at a private range.
Maybe maybe I'd scope this and shoot long range steel. Hmmm.
So many choices...
Anyone have a BFR in either 444 Marlin or 45-70 to comment on? Appreciate any info/suggestions.

My first BFR was a 45-70. It's crazy accurate and fun to shoot. Highly recommend!!!

My first BFR was a 45-70 also. It can be a real beast when loaded hot and heavy.

My 500JRH has the "Bisley" grip. For these rifle calibers is the Bisley or their huge rubber plowhandle grip recommended for recoil?
On edit: I do not see the Bisley grip offered on any of the BFR 444 Marlins on GB currently. Perhaps the market has concluded their rubber grip works fine?

Not in a bfr, but love it in the contender and Marlin.

I have a .45-70 BFR with a 7.5" barrel. It is super accurate and built like a tank. I love that gun. Highly recommend it. I'd go with the .45-70 as ammo and brass are much easier to find than the .444 Marlin.

I am a huge fan of the 444 cartridge, but I am only going to shoot it in a rifle.

IMO skip the 444 and go for the 45-70. Brass is much easier to find and resale value is better. BFR says the 45-70 is their #1 selling caliber.

Thanks, all.
45-70 is probably third on that list, but a close third.
The 30-30 is also a contender.
30-30 ammo is plentiful, I already handload 45-70 but the 444 Marlin just seemed almost exotic enough to be a doer.
I'll keep scratching my head while I decide.

Always buy exactly what you want!!! We get one shot at life, so enjoy it.
The 444 Marlin should be a spectacular performer with a nearly endless list of bullet options.

I could look it up, but I'm sure a lot of you guys know this off the top of your head... ( BTW... I have a 500 JRH, & 45-70 was 2nd BFR )... will the other 44 caliber hand gun cartridges fit in the 444 chamber???
just a question in theory, for those that don't handload... I load 444 buck & ball loads, shot loads, & low pressure loads for a Contender barrel made from a 44 Hot Shot barrel...
Trailboss in 444 handgun loads allow for much variety

No other 44 caliber cartridges will not fit the 444 chamber. A lot of gun writers over the years claimed the 444 was a stretched 44 magnum cartridge but when you read one of them you immediately know he does not know what he is talking about. I am a big fan of the 44 line of revolver cartridges and the 444 rifle cartridge. I know better than to mess with the 444 in a handgun. The 44 magnum and 445 have already covered that ground and do a great job.
