I never can figure out why. Rings and peeps are meant to be close to your eye so you focus on the top of the front sight. A ring sight at arms length from your eye makes no sense to me. But Im sure there are guys who will ride or die over the ring ruger sight insert.

I actually like them for hunting... I use Williams fire ring sights with a modified mount... on both revolvers & Contenders top picture is my 10" 45 Colt barrel, specifically set up for deer hunting... can use the ring for fast shots, or fiber optic dots for precise shots... I'm not defending them to the end, I use several sights... but the fiber optic ghost ring works well for me...

This will be o my 45 I use as my edc ranch carry. ***** Tried a large aperture or, as Jeff Cooper aptly called it, the “ghost ring,” with dismal results. First problem is, the aperture self-centers only when it is close to the eye, which doesn’t work without a buttstock. Second, the large ring attracts light and obscures target. Third, the ghost ring on a pistol is slower than an open sight. I’ve taken the Omega aperture (on Ruger base) hunting, and found it to block what I’m trying to see, and very much slower to align. My result against aerial targets----thrown water jugs----went badly; I couldn’t get on the moving target fast enough, and had no follow through. David Bradshaw

I tried one and couldn’t shoot as accurately as I wanted.

I use a skinner rear sight for my contender 410 turkey gun, have done a bit of quail and starling wing shooting with it too. Works pretty well for that but it is a shotgun… I will eventually take a file to a tc rear sight blade and try to make a poor man’s Emerson express rear sight. Then will have to figure out how to put a bead on the one piece front sight.

The guy that invented these particular Ruger Revolver Peep Sights was a coworker in the oilfield. I got to sit in on design changes, etc.
His company was "One Ragged Hole." Unfortunately health issues ended his career and company. It was sold out to Warren.
The sights are ok if you have a small bead front and plenty of time to aim. For general use, I'm not a fan...

Funny, I was cleaning my garage/shop last week and came across one that I bought from Dick a number of years ago. Seemed to have went lost which isn't hard...

Didn't care for the V rear/bead front sight setup on the Ruger Single-Six Hunter model and put one of the original peeps on from One Ragged Hole...and with that fine front bead it actually works very well...

Yes and loved it. Mine also was from One Ragged Hole. 5&1/2" SBH .44 Added a fiber optic front sight, and Hogue oversized wood grips. I'm a still hunter, in thick wood, shots tend to be quick, and short range. I never found that set up to be any slower and just as accurate as anything else. I don't handgun hunt anymore because I don't have the time to practice, so down the road the gun went to someone that would enjoy and use it. I like aperture sights so much that I added one to my single six. Thats still my hunting, fishing, camping, woods loafing gun, and always will be.
